{"id":109047,"date":"2021-05-19T14:55:57","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T13:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=109047"},"modified":"2021-05-19T18:24:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T17:24:44","slug":"sony-music-completes-430m-buyout-of-awal-but-uk-competition-body-is-investigating-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-music-completes-430m-buyout-of-awal-but-uk-competition-body-is-investigating-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Sony Music completes $430m buyout of AWAL &#8211; but UK competition body is investigating deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sony Music has today (May 19) confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of two companies from Kobalt Music Group: recorded music company AWAL plus Neighbouring Rights (formerly Kobalt Neighbouring Rights).<\/p>\n<p>However, not every hurdle has been cleared: Sony&#8217;s announcement comes in the same week that the UK&#8217;s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/sony-music-entertainment-slash-kobalt-music-group-merger-inquiry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirms it is opening an investigation<\/a> into the double acquisition, which Sony has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/confirmed-sony-music-is-paying-to-buy-awal-and-kobalt-neighbouring-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously valued<\/a> at $430 million. Lonny Olinick will remain AWAL\u2019s CEO.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Prior to the closing of the acquisition, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) initiated a review of the transaction. SME continues to work closely with the CMA to secure a positive outcome later this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>Could the UK competition watchdog now throw a spanner in the works of Sony&#8217;s completed AWAL takeover, and demand retrospective conditions to be met?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s certainly possible.
