{"id":115508,"date":"2021-09-21T08:35:02","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T07:35:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=115508"},"modified":"2021-09-21T08:36:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T07:36:32","slug":"universal-hits-massive-valuation-of-54bn-as-it-lists-on-amsterdam-stock-exchange","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-hits-massive-valuation-of-54bn-as-it-lists-on-amsterdam-stock-exchange\/","title":{"rendered":"Universal hits massive valuation of $54bn as it lists on Amsterdam Stock Exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MBW was expecting an impressive opening for UMG on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange today &#8211; but even we weren&#8217;t expecting this.<\/p>\n<p>UMG&#8217;s opening price is over a <em>third<\/em> bigger than the reference price that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-valued-at-39bn-ahead-of-amsterdam-listing-as-vivendi-sets-reference-price-of-e18-50-per-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vivendi confirmed<\/a> yesterday of \u20ac18.50 ($21.7) which would have valued UMG at \u20ac33.5 billion (approx. $39bn)<\/p>\n<p>What does that mean?<\/p>\n<p>It means that as of this morning, UMG has a \u20ac25.25 ($29.63) share price&#8230; which translates to a colossal valuation of<strong> \u20ac46.3 billion<\/strong> or<strong> $54.3 billion<\/strong> for the world&#8217;s biggest music rightsholder. respective 10% stakes are each worth \u20ac4.63 billion ($5.43bn).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">UMG provided potential investors with some detailed reading material last Tuesday (September 14) in the form of a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/vincent-bollore-is-about-to-own-7bn-plus-of-universal-shares-and-other-things-we-learned-from-umgs-new-prospectus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> pre-IPO prospectus<\/a>, which\u00a0 provided insight into its current and future shareholders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/vincent-bollore-is-about-to-own-7bn-plus-of-universal-shares-and-other-things-we-learned-from-umgs-new-prospectus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detai<\/a>ls of i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/vincent-bollore-is-about-to-own-7bn-plus-of-universal-shares-and-other-things-we-learned-from-umgs-new-prospectus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ts new post-IPO board<\/a>, business risks, executive rewards, plus historical financial information and profit forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>The firm&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/meet-universal-music-groups-new-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new board<\/a> includes\u00a0 Sir Lucian Grainge, who is Chairman &amp; Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, and Vincent Vallejo, UMG&#8217;s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Corporate and Executive Director.<\/p>\n<p>The board also includes James Mitchell, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Tencent Holdings Limited and a Director of New York Stock Exchange-listed Tencent Music Entertainment Group.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Universal\u2019s recorded music division\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-generated-8-4bn-last-year-as-ebitda-rose-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generated annual revenues<\/a>\u00a0of \u20ac5.97bn ($6.74bn) in 2020, up 6.7% YoY.<\/p>\n<p>According to UMG&#8217;s prospectus, which you can read for yourself <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2021\/09\/Universal_Music_Group_-_Prospectus_-14_September_2021-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through here<\/a>, no single artist accounted for more than 1% of the company\u2019s recorded music revenue in 2020, while the company\u2019s Top 50 artists cumulatively accounted for 23%.<\/p>\n<p>Catalog accounted for<strong>\u00a054%<\/strong>\u00a0of recorded music revenue (from digital and physical) at UMG in 2020, while frontline product (content less than three years old) accounted for\u00a0<strong>46%<\/strong> of recorded music revenue.<\/p>\n<p>UMG\u2019s catalog includes artists such as ABBA, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Bee Gees, Andrea Bocelli, James Brown, Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond, Marvin Gaye, Guns N\u2019 Roses, Elton John, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney and Nirvana.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>MBW\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/confirmed-universal-to-float-60-of-its-company-on-euronext-amsterdam-stock-exchange-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broke the news<\/a> in the middle of February that <a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"background: 0px 0px;color: unset !important;text-decoration: none;border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00\" title=\"Companies &gt;
