Now SM Entertainment artists are joining the superfan platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">SM Entertainment&#8217;s artists will be joining Weverse, the mobile app and web-based superfan platform built by rival K-pop company HYBE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The platform brings together artist-related content such as music videos, teasers, movies and live streams. It also has a merch platform known as Weverse Shop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">SM\u2019s artists \u2013 which include acts such as EXO, Girls Generation, Red Velvet and aespa \u2013 will move onto the Weverse platform in September of this year, according to a press release from Kakao Entertainment, as <a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2023\/04\/17\/business\/tech\/Korea-Kpop-HYBE\/20230417145243287.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited in Korean news media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__tweeny hidden-xs hidden-ms hidden-sm\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"992 1200 1440\" data-name=\"628x90 Sponsor banner #5 (992+1200+1440)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__banner mb-advert__banner--inline hidden-xs hidden-sm hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"480\" data-name=\"468x60 Sponsor banner #5 (480)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__mobile mb-advert__mobile--inline hidden-ms hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"320 768\" data-name=\"300x50 Sponsor banner #5 (320+768)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The news arrives just a few weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/kakao-officially-sm-entertainments-largest-shareholder-with-39-9-stake-as-hybe-holds-onto-8-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the end of an intense corporate battle<\/a> between HYBE and SM Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kakao Entertainment\u2019s parent company, Kakao Corp., last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/kakao-officially-sm-entertainments-largest-shareholder-with-39-9-stake-as-hybe-holds-onto-8-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">became SM\u2019s largest shareholder, after a high-profile fight against HYBE for control of the music company.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">HYBE, the company behind K-Pop superstars BTS, announced on March 12 that it was giving up its fight against Kakao Corp. for control of SM Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kakao, owner of the popular messaging app KakaoTalk, had made a bid for SM Entertainment at 150,000 Korean won (approx. <b>USD $113<\/b>) per share, outdoing HYBE\u2019s bid of 120,000 won (<b>$91<\/b>) per share.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It had originally looked like HYBE could take over its biggest rival after SM\u2019s founder, Lee Soo Man, sold his stake in the company to HYBE, giving it a 14.8% share of SM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But Kakao emerged as the winner in the bidding war, with a <b>39.9%<\/b> stake in SM. HYBE pared its stake in the company back to <b>8.8%<\/b>, hinting at the time that it was working on a platform deal with SM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That deal has now come to fruition, in what could prove to be a major win for HYBE, regardless of its failure to take control of SM Entertainment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The expansion of its Weverse platform to include SM artists could result in significant growth for the Weverse user base, at a time when HYBE is looking to expand globally, particularly in the US market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At the end of 2022, Weverse had more than 8.4 million monthly active users (see below), up 21% versus the prior quarter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-80x51.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-80x51.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-160x101.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-320x203.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-418x265.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-648x411.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-836x530.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-2023-04-17-at-16.45.06-1296x821.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">HYBE has made serious investments in the US, most notably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/scooter-braun-sells-ithaca-holdings-to-hybe-formerly-big-hit-entertainment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its <b>$1.05 billion<\/b> purchase of Scooter Braun\u2019s Ithaca Holdings<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Also, on February 8, Braun \u2013 now the sole CEO of HYBE America \u2013 <a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/hybe-makes-historic-key-acquisition-to-merge-with-qc-media-holdings-inc-the-parent-company-of-pierre-p-thomas-and-kevin-coach-k-lee-advancing-hybes-ambition-to-be-the-leader-in-global-entertainment-301742746.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that his firm had acquired the company best known as\u00a0Quality Control (QC), the Atlanta-born hip-hop specialist created by local legends\u00a0Pierre \u201cP\u201d Thomas\u00a0and\u00a0Kevin \u201cCoach K\u201d Lee.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was worth\u00a0<strong>$300 million<\/strong>\u00a0in total, according to\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/music-news\/hybe-acquires-atlanta-hip-hop-label-quality-control-1235321228\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Korean regulator filings<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 with\u00a0<strong>$250 million<\/strong>\u00a0of that figure paid in cash, and the rest in\u00a0<strong>HYBE<\/strong>\u00a0stock. (<strong>Raine Group<\/strong>\u00a0is understood to have priced QC.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\">At an investor presentation earlier this year, SM Entertainment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/hybes-not-the-only-k-pop-giant-eyeing-the-us-sm-entertainment-plans-150m-stateside-acquisition-to-speed-up-global-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced its own plans to expand into the US market, with an as-yet undetermined 200-billion-won (<b>$151m<\/b>) purchase of a music company.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">SM has suggested it wants to get involved in the hip-hop and R&amp;B side of the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">SM is just the latest K-pop label to join HYBE\u2019s Weverse. YG Entertainment, another large player in the Korean market, has also moved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bandwagon.asia\/articles\/yg-entertainment-joins-forces-partnership-big-hit-entertainment-weverse-news-kpop-korea-business-january-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artists<\/a> onto the platform, and in 2020, HYBE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/big-hits-weverse-app-has-been-key-to-its-400m-pandemic-success-now-its-expanding-the-tech-to-universal-music-group-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened its platform to Universal Music Group (UMG) artists.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">News reports out of Korea on Monday suggest that the move to Weverse will mean the end of SM Entertainment\u2019s rival platform, Kwangya Club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, it won\u2019t be the end of bubble, a platform run by SM subsidiary Dear U that allows users to send private messages to artists for a monthly subscription fee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cSM Entertainment will upgrade its communication with global fans with its existing one-on-one messaging platform bubble, in addition to the new community opening at Weverse,\u201d Kakao Entertainment said in a statement quoted in Korean media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Weverse has proven to be a major success story for HYBE, allowing it to weather two storms that rocked its business:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">The pandemic, which shut down live music in 2020, and<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">The announcement last year that HYBE\u2019s biggest act, BTS, is going on hiatus \u2013 an event that caused the company\u2019s share price to plunge <b>25%<\/b> in a day.<\/li><\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">HYBE \u2013 at the time still known as Big Hit Entertainment \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/big-hits-weverse-app-has-been-key-to-its-400m-pandemic-success-now-its-expanding-the-tech-to-universal-music-group-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saw its revenue grow in 2020 <\/a> despite the shutdown of live music, a fact that global CEO Lenzo Yoon attributed to the success of its \u201cplatform-based ecosystem,\u201d i.e. Weverse.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, HYBE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/hybe-revenues-soared-41-6-yoy-to-1-37bn-in-2022-surpassing-the-1-billion-dollar-mark-for-the-second-straight-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generated<\/a> 67.1 billion won ($51.9m) from its fan club activities (including Weverse), up 47.1% YoY.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a
