{"id":194307,"date":"2024-02-22T14:49:06","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T14:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=194307"},"modified":"2024-02-22T14:49:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-22T14:49:06","slug":"tiktoks-add-to-music-app-feature-is-rolling-out-in-another-163-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktoks-add-to-music-app-feature-is-rolling-out-in-another-163-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"TikTok&#8217;s &#8216;Add To Music App&#8217; feature is rolling out in another 163 countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TikTok may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-to-stop-licensing-its-music-to-tiktok-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embroiled in a dispute<\/a> with the world\u2019s largest music rightsholder, but that isn\u2019t stopping the platform from pushing further into the world of music.<\/p>\n<p>As of Thursday (February 22), TikTok\u2019s <strong>Add To Music App<\/strong> feature will be available in another 163 countries, meaning it will now be available virtually everywhere that TikTok itself is available.<\/p>\n<p>The feature, which allows users to save songs they discover on the platform to the music streaming service of their choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktok-strikes-partnership-with-spotify-and-amazon-music-to-link-app-directly-to-music-streaming-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched in the US and UK<\/a> last November. (Notably absent from the list are Russia, Iran and North Korea; also absent is China, where ByteDance operates TikTok\u2019s sister app, <strong>Douyin<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>The feature works within <strong>TikTok<\/strong> via a button that says \u201cAdd Song\u201d at the bottom of videos in a user&#8217;s \u201cFor You\u201d feed.<\/p>\n<p>When users click this button, they save the song to a playlist in their preferred music streaming service \u2013 including <strong>Amazon Music, Apple Music, or Spotify<\/strong> \u2013 on their device.<\/p>\n<p>(Songs are saved to a default playlist in these music apps, but<strong> TikTok<\/strong> users also have the option of saving them to a new or existing playlist they&#8217;ve created. We are really excited to be bringing the feature to millions more music fans around the world, providing even more opportunities for music discovery and consumption, and for artists to reach new audiences and grow their careers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The app also presents TikTok with the opportunity to do some in-depth market research on music streaming usage at a time when it\u2019s rolling out its own music streaming service: <strong>TikTok Music<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The premium-only service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktok-officially-launches-premium-only-tiktok-music-streaming-service-and-its-licensed-by-all-three-majors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched last July<\/a> in Brazil and Indonesia, with licenses from all three of the music majors (<strong>Sony Music<\/strong>, <strong>Universal Music Group<\/strong> and <strong>Warner Music Group<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;With Add to Music App, we are streamlining the music discovery experience for both TikTok users and artists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Isaac Bess, TikTok<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Around the same time, TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktok-music-expands-to-australia-mexico-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched the service in beta mode<\/a> in Australia, Mexico and Singapore. But when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktok-music-just-launched-publicly-in-australia-singapore-and-mexico-without-universal-musics-catalog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fully launched the service<\/a> in those markets in October, it did so only with Sony and Warner\u2019s catalogs, and without Universal\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>That foreshadowed what happened in January, when Universal\u2019s recorded music and publishing catalogs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-to-stop-licensing-its-music-to-tiktok-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began to disappear from TikTok<\/a>, as the two companies failed to come to a licensing agreement.<\/p>\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktoks-biggest-headache-universal-feud-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MBW\u2019s estimate<\/a>, the disappearance of UMG\u2019s music from TikTok means the music company stands to lose out on around <strong>$110 million<\/strong> in revenue on annual basis, but it represents a different kind of problem for the music-driven TikTok platform.<\/p>\n<p>During the first week of February, shortly after UMG tracks were taken off the platform, nearly half of the Top 50 tracks on TikTok were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/as-universal-music-hits-begin-vanishing-from-tiktok-umg-accuses-platform-of-unwillingness-to-appropriately-compensate-artists-and-songwriters-protect-human-artists-from-the-harmful-effects-of-ai1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unusable due to the ongoing conflict<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>All the same, TikTok\u2019s announcement of the expansion of the Add To Music App shows the company is undeterred in its expanding campaign to capitalize on the popularity and centrality of music on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, TikTok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktok-just-launched-its-own-music-distribution-platform-soundon12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched its own music distribution platform<\/a>, <strong>SoundOn<\/strong>, and in 2023, parent company ByteDance unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tiktoks-parent-has-launched-an-ai-music-making-app-what-might-this-mean-for-the-video-platforms-music-licensing-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an AI-driven music-making platform<\/a> called <strong>Ripple<\/strong>.
