Artists want to work with every single platform\u2026 they don&#8217;t want to optimize just for one platform over another. So a solution like this for superfans has to be a cross-platform solution. We, as a record label, are in a perfect position to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Robert Kyncl<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kyncl added that superfans &#8220;are generally the people that consume the most and spend the most&#8221; and that WMG is &#8220;focused on making sure that artists get data on these superfans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Nora Fatehi reacted to the news of the new app saying, \u201cThis sounds exciting\u2026 sign me up for this one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p>News of WMG developing its own superfan app arrives at a time when music industry leaders are becoming increasingly interested in monetizing the relationships between artists and fans.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the year, for example, <a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"background: 0px 0px;color: unset !important;text-decoration: none;border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [3,403 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music Group<\/a>\u00a0Chairman and CEO,\u00a0<strong><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"background: 0px 0px;color: unset !important;text-decoration: none;border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00\" title=\"People &gt; Sir Lucian Grainge [603 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/sir-lucian-grainge\/\">Sir Lucian Grainge<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sir-lucian-grainge-after-artist-centric-royalties-umgs-next-focus-is-superfan-experiences-and-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> a New Year note to UMG\u2019s global workforce, in which he forecasted an ongoing shift in the wider streaming market towards an \u2018artist-centric\u2019 royalties model.<\/p>\n<p>UMG\u2019s Chairman and CEO also announced that following UMG\u2019s focus over the past year on getting streaming platforms to adopt an \u2018artist-centric\u2019 approach, UMG\u2019s strategy will now be centered on<strong>\u00a0\u201cstrengthening the artist-fan relationship\u201d<\/strong>, specifically through \u201c<strong>superfan experiences<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and products\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p>In his own New Year note to WMG staff last month, Kyncl <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/wmgs-robert-kyncl-plan-for-2024-and-how-this-will-be-the-year-of-the-next-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled<\/a> his long-term strategy for Warner, calling 2024, \u201cThe Year of The Next 10\u201d. He also commented on his plan to \u201cincrease the value of music\u201d, and as part of that strategy he outlined the &#8220;need to develop [WMG&#8217;s] direct artist-superfan products and experiences\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Added Kyncl in his New Year note: \u201cBoth artists and superfans want deeper relationships, and it\u2019s an area that\u2019s relatively untapped and under-monetized. The good news is that we already have initiatives in flight against most of these areas, and specific projects with momentum behind them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Doha on Tuesday, Kyncl told the audience more about one of those initiatives, WMG&#8217;s own superfan app. He noted that WMG&#8217;s work on the app is &#8220;quite advanced&#8221; and that it will launch later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Added Kyncl: &#8220;Music is omnipresent, it&#8217;s everywhere. Artists want to work with every single platform. They don&#8217;t want to optimize just for one platform over another.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So a solution like this for superfans has to be a cross-platform solution. We, as a record label, are in a perfect position to do that because we work with all of the platforms. Historically, we haven&#8217;t had the technology talent to do this, but now we do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kyncl didn&#8217;t give any more details on the app, but there are potential shades of HYBE&#8217;s Weverse, with an added &#8220;cross-platform&#8221; element.<\/p>\n<p>The HYBE-owned Weverse app brings together artist-related content such as music videos, teasers, movies and live streams. It also has a merch platform known as <strong>Weverse Shop<\/strong>, a music player called\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.weverse.co\/weversealbums\" rel=\"noopener\">Weverse albums<\/a>,\u00a0 and a K-Pop-centric music publication called\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.weverse.co\/weversemagazine\" rel=\"noopener\">Weverse Magazine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can read more about Weverse in our recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/could-hybes-weverse-offer-a-template-for-universal-music-groups-courting-of-superfans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis over here.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The development of Warner Music Group&#8217;s &#8216;superfan app&#8217; arrives alongside recent evidence of the impact that the superfan category of fan is having on the music business.<\/p>\n<p>US market monitor\u00a0<strong>Luminate<\/strong>, in its Year End report for 2023 (<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/global-on-demand-audio-streams-reached-the-4-trillion-mark-for-the-first-time-ever-in-a-single-year-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> last month), revealed that <strong>18%<\/strong>\u00a0of US music listeners are superfans.
