{"id":196988,"date":"2024-03-21T14:27:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T14:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=196988"},"modified":"2024-05-03T17:24:55","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T16:24:55","slug":"global-recorded-music-revenues-rose-10-2-to-28-6bn-in-2023-as-paid-subscriptions-to-music-streaming-services-exceed-500m-globally12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/global-recorded-music-revenues-rose-10-2-to-28-6bn-in-2023-as-paid-subscriptions-to-music-streaming-services-exceed-500m-globally12\/","title":{"rendered":"Global recorded music revenues rose 10.2% to $28.6bn in 2023, as paid subscriptions to music streaming services exceed 500m globally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"background: 0px 0px;color: unset !important;text-decoration: none;border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00\" title=\"Companies &gt; IFPI [540 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/ifpi\/\">IFPI<\/a>, the organization that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has published its <em>Global Music Report<\/em>, which reports on global trade revenues for the recorded music industry in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The headline stat from IFPI&#8217;s report, which you can read in full <a href=\"https:\/\/globalmusicreport.ifpi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>: Global recorded music revenues rose <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>10.2% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in 2023 to reach <strong>USD $28.6 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year (2023) marked the global music market\u2019s ninth consecutive year of growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__tweeny hidden-xs hidden-ms hidden-sm\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"992 1200 1440\" data-name=\"628x90 Sponsor banner #5 (992+1200+1440)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__banner mb-advert__banner--inline hidden-xs hidden-sm hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"480\" data-name=\"468x60 Sponsor banner #5 (480)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__mobile mb-advert__mobile--inline hidden-ms hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"320 768\" data-name=\"300x50 Sponsor banner #5 (320+768)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p>Subscription streaming revenues grew by<strong><span style=\"color: #008000\"> 11.2% YoY<\/span><\/strong> last year, accounting for <strong>48.9%<\/strong> of the global market, which in dollar terms, means that subscription streaming revenues reached <strong>$14 billion<\/strong> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2023, Spotify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-is-raising-its-price-music-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased<\/a> its flagship subscription prices in 53 markets, including the US, typically by around 10%.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Spotify, IFPI&#8217;s numbers will also have been affected by price rises by other streaming services such as \u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/amazon-music-raises-standard-monthly-subscription-price-from-9-99-to-10-99-spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple Music<\/a>\u00a0(October 2022),\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/amazon-music-raises-standard-monthly-subscription-price-from-9-99-to-10-99-spotify\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Music<\/a>\u00a0(January 2023), and\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cordbusters.co.uk\/youtube-premium-price-hike-uk\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube Music\/Premium<\/a>\u00a0(August 2023).<\/p>\n<p><em>Total<\/em> streaming revenues (including both paid subscription and advertising-supported) grew <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>10.4% YoY<\/strong> <\/span>to reach <strong>$19.3 billion<\/strong> in 2023 and\u00a0accounted for more than two-thirds (<strong>67.3%<\/strong>) of the total global market.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the number of paid subscriptions to music streaming services passed<strong> 500 million<\/strong> for the first time, according to IFPI. There are also now more than <strong>667 million<\/strong> users of paid subscription accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, IFPI reports that physical revenues grew\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>13.4% YoY<\/strong><\/span> to <strong>$5.1 billion<\/strong> in 2023, while performance rights revenues rose by <strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">9.5% YoY<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to <strong>$2.7 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>IFPI also breaks down its latest numbers geographically, showing that Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) was the fastest-growing music region in 2023. (It was also the fastest-growing music region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/global-recorded-music-revenues-reached-26-2bn-in-2022-up-9-yoy1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2022.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Recorded music revenues in Sub-Saharan Africa grew by <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>24.7% <\/strong><\/span>in 2023, fuelled, according to IFPI, by a <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>24.5%<\/strong><\/span> rise in paid streaming revenues.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p><strong>Europe<\/strong> saw growth of <strong>8.9%<\/strong> in 2023, while the USA &amp; Canada &#8211; the world\u2019s largest region in revenue terms \u2013 grew <strong>7.4%<\/strong> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> Latin America, <\/strong>recorded music revenues rose<span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong> 19.4%<\/strong><\/span>, marking the region&#8217;s 14th consecutive year of revenue growth. IFPI reports that &#8220;there were double-digit percentage climbs in revenues&#8221; in Brazil (+13.4%) and Mexico (+18.2%), the region\u2019s largest markets. Streaming was the key driver behind the region&#8217;s growth and made up <strong>86.3%<\/strong> of its revenues in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Middle East and North Africa<\/strong> (MENA), revenues rose by <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>14.4%<\/strong><\/span> in 2023. <strong>Australasia<\/strong> saw growth of<span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong> 10.8%<\/strong><\/span> in 2023, boosted by an increase in subscription streaming revenues (+13.5%).<\/p>\n<p>Revenues in <strong>Asia<\/strong> rose by <span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>14.9%<\/strong><\/span> in 2023. In Japan, the world\u2019s second-biggest market, revenues were up by 7.6%. China (the world&#8217;s fifth largest market) saw growth of 25.9%, which IFPI notes was &#8220;the fastest rate of increase in any Top 10 market&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s Top 10 music markets in 2023 remained unchanged compared to 2022. According to the IFPI, the Top 10 music markets in 2023 were:<\/p>\n<ul><li>1. USA<\/li><li>2. Japan<\/li><li>3. UK<\/li><li>4. Germany<\/li><li>5. China<\/li><li>6. France<\/li><li>7. South Korea<\/li><li>8. Canada<\/li><li>9. Brazil<\/li><li>10. Australia<\/li><\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe figures in this year\u2019s report reflect a truly global and diverse industry, with revenues growing in every market, every region and across virtually every recorded music format.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">John Nolan, IFPI<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Commenting on the release of the Global Music Report, IFPI\u2019s Chief Financial Officer and Interim Joint Head of IFPI, John Nolan, said: \u201cThe figures in this year\u2019s report reflect a truly global and diverse industry, with revenues growing in every market, every region and across virtually every recorded music format.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the third year in succession, both physical and digital formats grew with a strong rise in the users of paid streaming subscribers \u2013 as well as price increases &#8211; contributing significantly to total revenue growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis growth results from record companies\u2019 sustained investment in artists and their careers \u2013 more than USD $7.1 billion annually on A&amp;R and marketing* alone \u2013 and the impact it has on music ecosystems all over the world. Fans are increasingly valuing music, with unprecedented choice and access to new releases, with 2023\u2019s IFPI Global Charts including a diverse range of new genres and artists.
