What makes this announcement so interesting is that it arrives a little over a week since Swift&#8217;s music <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/taylor-swift-has-a-laudable-history-of-standing-up-to-big-tech-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started to reappear on the platform.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prior to last week, and since February\/March, Swift&#8217;s music had been absent on TikTok, along with music from other Universal Music Group-affiliated stars, such as Drake, Ariana Grande, and Camila Cabello, whose music continues to be (officially) unavailable on TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because of Universal Music Group&#8217;s ongoing licensing dispute with TikTok over the app\u2019s compensation for artists and songwriters, and concerns about TikTok\u2019s use of AI.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>On March 1, Universal Music Publishing\u2019s catalog of over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-generated-51-of-2023-recorded-music-annual-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4 million songs<\/a> became unlicensed for use on TikTok, joining UMG\u2019s portfolio of over 3 million recordings, whose license on TikTok expired (so far without renewal) on February 1.<\/p>\n<p>Swift has both recording and publishing agreements with UMG. UMG\u2019s\u00a0Republic Records\u00a0is Swift\u2019s label in the US, and she\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/taylor-swift-signs-exclusive-global-publishing-deal-with-umpg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a deal<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Universal Music Publishing Group\u00a0in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>As we explained last week, however, Swift is, at this point, very notable in the music industry for the unusual amount of control she has over her own music.<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/taylor-swift-songs-back-tiktok-despite-ban-new-album-1235871915\/\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>, Swift has owned the publishing rights to her songs since 2019; meanwhile,\u00a0<em>Variety<\/em>\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/digital\/news\/taylor-swift-songs-return-tiktok-1235967738\/\" rel=\"noopener\">speculated<\/a>\u00a0that TikTok likely \u201creached a separate deal with Swift,\u201d as she owns many of her own master recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Since joining TikTok in 2021, Taylor Swift has amassed a following of more than <strong>25.3 million<\/strong> fans and has earned more than 223.7 million likes across her content.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok reports that hashtags related to the singer &#8220;continue to garner high engagement&#8221;, with the #SwiftTok hashtag growing to over <strong>2.4 million<\/strong> videos creations and #TaylorsVersion earning more than<strong> 2 million<\/strong> videos.<\/p>\n<p>MBW pointed out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/taylor-swift-has-a-laudable-history-of-standing-up-to-big-tech-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Reacts column<\/a> published a few days ago that Ariana Grande\u2019s <em>Eternal Sunshine<\/em>, released in March via UMG&#8217;s Republic Records, didn\u2019t appear on TikTok, and still landed at No.1 on the Billboard 200. feature.<\/p>\n<p>The tool was launched in the UK and US in November and lets TikTok users save songs they discover via TikTok on the streaming services where they listen to their music, including Spotify and <a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"background: 0px 0px;color: unset !important;text-decoration: none;border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00\" title=\"Companies &gt;
