color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [3,503 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music Group<\/a><\/strong> came to light at the end of January, when UMG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-to-stop-licensing-its-music-to-tiktok-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that its agreement with TikTok was set to expire on January 31, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>UMG confirmed that the companies had not agreed to terms for a new deal, and upon expiration of their agreement, UMG, including <a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"background: 0px 0px; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Publishing Group [401 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/universal-music-publishing-group\/\">Universal Music Publishing Group<\/a>, would \u201c<strong>cease licensing content<\/strong>\u201d to TikTok and TikTok Music services.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the announcement, Universal published an \u2018open letter to the artist and songwriter community\u2019, in which it details the reasons why the companies\u2019 negotiations have ended without a deal.<\/p>\n<p>UMG said in the letter that during its contract renewal discussions with TikTok, it has been \u201cpressing\u201d the platform on \u201cthree critical issues\u201d including \u201cappropriate compensation for our artists and songwriters, protecting human artists from the harmful effects of AI, and online safety for TikTok\u2019s users\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new agreement appears to address these issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the deal, the companies say they &#8220;will work together to realize new monetization opportunities&#8221; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [3,503 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal Music Group<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(UMG) and\u00a0<strong>TikTok<\/strong>, UMG had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/down-the-skibidi-toilet-why-universal-music-groups-project-timeout-is-spamming-tiktok-with-endless-copyright-takedown-requests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> over <strong>37,000 takedown requests<\/strong>\u00a0to TikTok, resulting in\u00a0<strong>120 million videos<\/strong>\u00a0being muted.<\/p>\n<p>By the time MBW had published that article, TikTok had already muted the audio on videos featuring <strong>UMG-licensed<\/strong> music, but its detection mechanism was being bypassed by \u2018modified\u2019 (sped up or otherwise changed) versions of UMG-owned tracks uploaded by users.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Around a month later, on Thursday, April 11, the music of Taylor Swift, one of Universal Music Group&#8217;s biggest stars, started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/taylor-swift-has-a-laudable-history-of-standing-up-to-big-tech-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reappearing<\/a> on <strong>TikTok<\/strong> \u2013 despite the licensing dispute between the social media platform and UMG.<\/p>\n<p>Swift has both recording and publishing agreements with UMG. UMG\u2019s\u00a0Republic Records\u00a0is Swift\u2019s label in the US, and she\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/taylor-swift-signs-exclusive-global-publishing-deal-with-umpg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a deal<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Universal Music Publishing Group\u00a0in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>As we explained the other week, Swift is notable in the music industry for the unusual amount of control she has over her own music.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0<em>Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/taylor-swift-songs-back-tiktok-despite-ban-new-album-1235871915\/\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>, Swift has owned the publishing rights to her songs since 2019; meanwhile, <em>Variety<\/em>\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/digital\/news\/taylor-swift-songs-return-tiktok-1235967738\/\" rel=\"noopener\">speculated<\/a>\u00a0that TikTok likely \u201creached a separate deal with Swift,\u201d as she owns many of her own master recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Swift&#8217;s return to TikTok arrived around a week before the release of her latest album, <em>The Tortured Poets Department, <\/em>on Friday, April 19.
