JP Morgan acted as broker for Ek&#8217;s share sale.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-80x43.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-80x43.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-160x86.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-320x172.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-418x224.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-648x348.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-24-at-23.08.26-836x449.jpg 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">An SEC filing shows Ek cashed out $118.8 million in shares today (April 24)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The move is the fourth time in the past 12 months that <strong>Ek<\/strong> has cashed in some of his<strong> Spotify<\/strong> stock:<\/p>\n<ul><li>In July 2023, Ek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/daniel-ek-sells-100m-worth-of-spotify-shares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold <strong>675,000<\/strong> shares<\/a> for <strong>$100 million<\/strong> in proceeds;<\/li><li>In October 2023, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/daniel-ek-just-banked-64m-selling-spotify-shares-three-months-after-he-banked-100m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold <strong>400,000<\/strong> shares<\/a> for <strong>$64.2 million<\/strong> in proceeds;<\/li><li>And in February this year, Ek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/daniel-ek-cashes-out-another-57-5m-in-spotify-stock-after-selling-64m-months-earlier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold <strong>250,000<\/strong> shares<\/a> for <strong>$57.5 million<\/strong> in proceeds<\/li><\/ul>\n<p>Across these four transactions (today&#8217;s included), Ek has cashed out approximately <strong>$340.5 million<\/strong> in Spotify shares since last summer.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ek&#8217;s latest <strong>$118.8 million<\/strong> cash-out comes as one particular sector of the music business \u2013 music publishers \u2013 isn&#8217;t feeling too enamored with <strong>Spotify.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week, <strong>Spotify<\/strong> confirmed that it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/nmpa-accuses-spotify-of-attacking-songwriters-as-it-changes-how-it-pays-mechanical-royalties-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changed the formula<\/a> by which it pays out mechanical royalties to publishers and songwriters in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>This change sees Spotify re-categorize its Premium subscriptions as <strong>&#8220;bundles&#8221;<\/strong>, because they offer users access to both music and audiobook content.<\/p>\n<p>This is no arbitrary change: by re-categorizing Premium subscriptions as <strong>&#8220;bundles&#8221;<\/strong>, under terms of a 2022 ruling from the US Copyright Royalty Board, <strong>Spotify<\/strong> believes it can pay a lower rate of mechanical royalties for the use of music on its platform in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Israelite<\/strong>, CEO and President of the National Music Publishers&#8217; Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/nmpa-accuses-spotify-of-attacking-songwriters-as-it-changes-how-it-pays-mechanical-royalties-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responded to news<\/a> of Spotify&#8217;s &#8216;bundles&#8217;
