But new data from Spotify offers a sharp glimpse into how powerful this trend can be.<\/p>\n<p>The South Africa-born amapiano genre is only a decade old, but in 2023 it clocked <strong>1.4 billion streams<\/strong> on Spotify alone, the music streaming service said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/amapiano10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series of articles<\/a> dedicated to the growth of the genre on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>That represents a growth rate of <strong>5,668%<\/strong> since 2018, Spotify said.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as 2019, the genre had clocked just <strong>34 million<\/strong> streams. Social media gave them a way to show off their moves and get others to imitate them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pandemic-era social media dance challenges such as the #Johnvuligatechallenge, JazziDisciples dance challenge, and #Amanikinikichallenge \u201cmarked key moments when youth culture connected with and amplified the genre through social media,\u201d Spotify said.<\/p>\n<p>The music streaming service didn\u2019t waste the opportunity for a little self-promotion, noting that, during the pandemic, it set up a feature that allowed artists to raise money from listeners.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #3\" data-params=\"dfp_spu3\" id=\"dfp_spu3\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>\u201cPandemic restrictions on live events meant many artists lost their income. Some resorted to loans or selling their equipment to make ends meet. Germany, the Netherlands, France and Canada were also among the top 10 countries where amapiano has gained a foothold, in terms of streaming count.<\/p>\n<p>Some key moments in the cultural expansion of amapiano in the past few years came when <strong>Beyonce<\/strong> played <strong>Uncle Waffles<\/strong>\u2019 <em>Tanzania<\/em> during her <em>Renaissance<\/em> world tour; when <strong>Jennifer Hudson<\/strong> of the US syndicated daytime show <em>The Jennifer Hudson Show<\/em> learned the viral dance from <strong>Titom<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Yuppe<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Tshwala Bam<\/em>; and when <strong>Tyla<\/strong> performed her megahit <em>Water<\/em> on <em>The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon<\/em>. In 2023, <strong>55%<\/strong> of all amapiano streams came from South Africa, and in sub-Saharan Africa, it accounted for <strong>78%<\/strong> of all streams, per Spotify\u2019s data.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also very much a youth-driven musical phenomenon, with <strong>40%<\/strong> of amapiano streams coming from people aged 18 to 24, and another <strong>22%<\/strong> from the 25-29 age group, Spotify says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cJust being from Africa, we\u2019re obsessed with saying things in our own voice right now. It\u2019s how you make an imprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Focalistic<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYoung people have always driven big shifts in the music sector, but with amapiano, their impact has been and continues to be especially significant,\u201d said <strong>Jodie Tabisher<\/strong>, Spotify\u2019s Artist, Label and Partnerships Manager for South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify asserts that access to digital music via smartphones was also key to the success of amapiano.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour years before South Africa\u2019s first [pandemic] lockdown, less than half of the country owned smartphones,\u201d Spotify wrote. \u201cBy the end of 2019, this number rose to <strong>92%<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spotify says <strong>84%<\/strong> of all amapiano streams are on smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>Given all this, it\u2019s little wonder that amapiano is becoming a major part of South African culture \u2013 and a part of the country\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmapiano was kind of like a breath of fresh air, the light of the sun, something that was close to our heart,\u201d Spotify quotes Pretoria-born rapper <strong>Focalistic<\/strong> as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust being from Africa, we\u2019re obsessed with saying things in our own voice right now.
