explained <strong>Aurelien Herault<\/strong>, Chief Innovation Officer at Deezer<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have addressed this challenge and created a tool that is significantly more robust and applicable to multiple models.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--right\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-07-25-at-19.33.29-e1721932464208-80x67.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-07-25-at-19.33.29-e1721932464208-160x135.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-07-25-at-19.33.29-e1721932464208-320x270.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-07-25-at-19.33.29-e1721932464208-418x352.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-07-25-at-19.33.29-e1721932464208-648x546.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2024\/07\/Screenshot-2024-07-25-at-19.33.29-e1721932464208-836x704.jpg 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure><p>\u201cGenerative AI has the potential to positively impact music creation and consumption, but its use must be guided by responsibility and care in order to safeguard the rights and revenues of artists and songwriters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alexis Lanternier, Deezer<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Deezer\u2019s new tool, on which the company filed for two patents in December, \u201ccan detect artificially created music from a number of generative models such as <strong>Suno<\/strong> and <strong>Udio<\/strong>, with the possibility to add on detection capabilities for practically any other similar tool as long as there\u2019s access to relevant data examples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suno and Udio are among the most popular generative music AI tools on the market today.<\/p>\n<p>The companies were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/major-record-companies-sue-ai-music-generators-suno-udio-for-mass-infringement-of-copyright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued last year<\/a> by labels owned by the three majors, alleging that the AI companies trained their models on copyrighted music without authorization.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Suno was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/500m-valued-suno-hit-with-new-copyright-lawsuit-from-germanys-gema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also sued<\/a> by German collection society and licensing body <strong>GEMA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Deezer has been among the most aggressive digital service providers (DSPs) when it comes to detecting AI-generated content, \u201cnoise\u201d tracks meant to skim royalty revenue, and other low-quality content.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/popular-artists-to-get-royalty-boost-on-deezer-as-platform-strikes-artist-centric-agreement-with-universal-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched an \u201cartist-centric\u201d payment model<\/a> with <strong>Universal Music Group<\/strong>, designed to reward artists with large followings who are actively sought for by subscribers, and to disincentivize low-quality content. Other music companies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/warner-music-group-has-signed-up-for-deezers-artist-centric-royalties-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Warner Music Group<\/strong><\/a> and indie licensing organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/indie-artists-shift-to-artist-centric-payments-on-deezer-as-streaming-service-signs-new-deal-with-merlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Merlin<\/strong><\/a>, have since signed on to the model in France.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Deezer announced last year that it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/deezer-has-deleted-26m-useless-tracks-since-it-launched-artist-centric-model-with-universal-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deleted <strong>26 million<\/strong> \u201cuseless\u201d tracks<\/a> from its platform following the artist-centric rollout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of duplicated content, there\u2019s a lot of content that is not even music\u2026 and at a certain point, you get way too much content that is useless for the users. And it starts creating a bad user experience,\u201d then-CEO <strong>Jeronimo Folgueira<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>The growing presence of AI-generated music on streaming platforms has become a major concern for artists, labels, and publishers.<\/p>\n<p>A report released late last year by <strong>CISAC<\/strong>, the global umbrella group for authors\u2019 societies, estimated that AI could \u201ccannibalize\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/market-for-gen-ai-outputs-to-be-worth-over-16bn-annually-by-2028-but-it-could-cannibalize-24-of-music-creators-revenues-cisac-predicts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to <strong>24%<\/strong> of music creators\u2019 revenues<\/a> by 2028.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>It estimated a cumulative loss of <strong>EUR \u20ac22 billion<\/strong> (<strong>USD $23.1 billion<\/strong>) in revenue for music and audiovisual creators over five years (2023 through 2028), compared to what would have been earned had AI not existed.
