Stat Of the Week is supported by\u00a0music data analytics firm\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/chartmetric.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chartmetric<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\n<p>US performance rights organization ASCAP has reported its revenue and royalty payout numbers for 2024, with both numbers hitting all-time highs.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue came in at <strong>$1.835 billion<\/strong> for calendar 2024, up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>5.7%<\/strong><\/span> year over year. Of that, ASCAP paid out <strong>$1.284 billion<\/strong> to rights holders, up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>5.5% YoY<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign revenue collections came in at <strong>$438 million<\/strong>, up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>6.8% YoY<\/strong><\/span>, of which <strong>$411 million<\/strong> was paid out to rightsholders, up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>9.8% YoY<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 10 years, ASCAP has seen a compound annual growth rate of <strong>7%<\/strong> for revenue and <strong>8%<\/strong> for distributions, indicating a long-term trend towards paying out a larger share of revenue to rightsholders.<\/p>\n<p>ASCAP also reported that its membership \u201csoared past the <strong>1 million<\/strong> mark\u201d in 2024 as it attracted a slew of new members. (The org stresses that it isn\u2019t a licensed non-profit, rather it\u2019s an unincorporated membership association that operates without taking a net profit.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor songwriters, composers and publishers, ASCAP provides the best return on their performance royalties because they get 90 cents of every dollar we collect. It&#8217;s that simple. For us, this is more than just business \u2013 it\u2019s personal, and that\u2019s what sets ASCAP apart from any other PRO.\u201d<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #3\" data-params=\"dfp_spu3\" id=\"dfp_spu3\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>ASCAP\u2019s latest annual earnings report comes as the <strong>US Copyright Office<\/strong> (USCO) prepares for an inquiry into \u201cquestions related to the increase in the number of PROs and the licensing revenue distribution practices of PROs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inquiry was prompted by a letter to the USCO by congressmembers on the House Judiciary Committee, who echoed concerns from music licensees such as hotels, restaurants and bars that new PROs have been making demands for royalty payments above and beyond the blanket licenses the businesses obtained from established PROs.
