{"id":226577,"date":"2025-03-18T18:47:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-18T18:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=226577"},"modified":"2025-03-18T19:11:00","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T19:11:00","slug":"recorded-music-streaming-revenues-grew-by-just-3-6-yoy-in-the-united-states-in-2024-dragged-down-by-a-decline-in-advertising-payouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/recorded-music-streaming-revenues-grew-by-just-3-6-yoy-in-the-united-states-in-2024-dragged-down-by-a-decline-in-advertising-payouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Recorded music streaming revenues grew by just 3.6% YoY in the United States in 2024 \u2013 dragged down by a decline in advertising payouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The IFPI&#8217;s official global trade figures for recorded music in 2024 are due tomorrow (March 19), and MBW is hearing rumors of positive news \u2013 including worldwide users of paid music services tipping up somewhere above 750 million.<\/p>\n<p>Before then, however, comes a number that will grab attention for <strong>less-than-sparkling reasons. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to new data issued by the <strong>RIAA today<\/strong> (March 18), recorded music trade revenues from streaming in the United States \u2013 the world&#8217;s largest music market \u2013 grew by just <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>3.6% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in 2024, up to <strong>USD $14.88 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that US-based inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/united-states\/inflation-cpi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sat at around <strong>3%<\/strong><\/a> in the 12 calendar months of last year, this number is unlikely to get industry watchers hot under the collar.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore,\u00a0 <strong><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; tier.<\/p>\n<p>Combined, these platforms saw their revenue contribution to the recorded music industry <em>decline<\/em> in the US last year, down <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>1.8% YoY<\/strong> <\/span>to <strong>$1.83 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on-demand &#8216;Paid&#8217; subscription platforms \u2013 like Spotify Premium, YouTube Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, and Apple Music \u2013 contributed <strong>$11.685 billion<\/strong> to recorded music rightsholders, up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>4.6% YoY<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Outside of these obvious unlimited &#8216;Paid&#8217; subscription services, the RIAA counts &#8216;Limited Tier&#8217; subscription products \u2013 including Amazon Prime and Pandora Plus \u2013 separately.)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-80x65.png\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-80x65.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-160x131.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-320x262.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-418x342.png 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-648x530.png 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-836x684.png 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/RIAAStreaming-1296x1060.png 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The overall US recorded music market&#8217;s revenues \u2013 including streaming, physical sales, downloads, advertising, and sync \u2013 grew by just <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>3.3% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in 2024, according to the RIAA, generating a total of <strong>$17.67 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a <em>retail<\/em> revenue estimate from the trade org, meaning it takes into account what consumers <em>spent<\/em> on music sales and subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>In particularly glum news for music rightsholders, the <strong>RIAA<\/strong> says that on a <em>wholesale<\/em> basis (i.e. the money that actually ended up with artists, labels, and distributors), the US recorded music industry grew by just <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2.7% YoY<\/strong><\/span> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Remember: that <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2.7%<\/strong><\/span> growth was actually<em>\u00a0lower<\/em> than inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The total wholesale amount generated by artists, labels, and distributors in the year, says the RIAA, was<strong>\u00a0$11.3 billion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That was up by approximately +<strong>$300 million<\/strong> vs. the equivalent wholesale figure from 2023 (<strong>$11.0 billion<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>In turn, that $300 million YoY wholesale revenue growth was <em>less than half the size<\/em> of the equivalent growth (<strong>+$700 million<\/strong>) seen in the prior year.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-80x36.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-80x36.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-160x73.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-320x145.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-418x190.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-648x294.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-836x380.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-18-at-14.41.23-1296x588.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Amongst all this middling news, the industry experienced a landmark moment in 2024: the number of paid subscriptions to on-demand music services in the United States hit <strong>100 million<\/strong> for the first time in history.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to the RIAA\u2019s new end-of-year report, the United States saw just <strong>3.2 million<\/strong> net additions of Paid music subscription accounts in 2024 vs. the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the chart below, that <strong>+3.2 million YoY<\/strong> net increase in 2024 compared to a<strong> +5.2\u00a0million YoY<\/strong> net rise in 2023,<strong> +7.6 million<\/strong> in 2022,<strong>\u00a0+8.5 million<\/strong> in 2021, and <strong>+15.1 million<\/strong> in 2020 \u2013 a steady pattern of deceleration in the growth of subscriptions in the US market.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>These<\/em> RIAA figures are for premium paid subscription accounts only; they don\u2019t include \u2018Limited Tier\u2019 subscriptions. They count multi-user subscriptions like Family plans as individual accounts.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-80x45.png\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-80x45.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-160x90.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-320x179.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-418x234.png 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-648x363.png 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/riaa-fy-subscription-volume-836x469.png 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It&#8217;s worthwhile looking at that <strong>100 million<\/strong> subscriber stat in the context of the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibisworld.com\/us\/bed\/number-of-households\/31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> households in the United States last year.<\/p>\n<p>According to recent estimates, there were <strong>133.8 million households <\/strong>in the US at the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong>100 million<\/strong> paid music subscriptions in the market at the same point in time, the US appears to be nudging ever-closer to saturation point for paid music subs.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Paid streaming<em>\u00a0revenue<\/em>\u00a0grew faster than the\u00a0<em>volume<\/em> of Paid streaming subscriptions in 2024 implies that music subscriber ARPU (Average revenue per user) slightly improved in the market YoY.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, total physical music sales (on a retail basis) grew<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong> 5% YoY<\/strong> <\/span>to <strong>$2 billion <\/strong>in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Revenues from vinyl records grew <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>7% YoY<\/strong><\/span> to <strong>$1.4 billion, <\/strong>which the RIAA noted was the 18th consecutive year of growth for the format. Vinyl records accounted for nearly three-quarters of total physical revenues in the US last year.<\/p>\n<p>For the third year in a row, vinyl albums outsold CDs in units (44 million vs 33 million).
