Stat Of the Week is supported by\u00a0music data analytics firm\u00a0<a class=\"link-external\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chartmetric.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Chartmetric<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<hr \/>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Yesterday, the RIAA&#8217;s end-of-year music report for 2024 <\/strong><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/recorded-music-streaming-revenues-grew-by-just-3-6-yoy-in-the-united-states-in-2024-dragged-down-by-a-decline-in-advertising-payouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>revealed<\/strong><\/a><strong> a few gloomy stats about the US recorded music market<\/strong><b>. <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Things are looking a lot sunnier globally, however, according to a new report from <strong>I<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>FPI<\/strong>, the organization that represents the recording industry worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figures released today (March 19) in IFPI\u2019s Global Music Report 2025 show that total trade revenues reached <strong>USD $29.6 billion<\/strong> in 2024, up by <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">4.8% YoY.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The report, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalmusicreport.ifpi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which you can see here<\/a>, also shows that global recorded music revenues\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">grew in every region for the third consecutive year, with breakneck growth in\u00a0<strong>Latin America (<\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">+22.5%<\/span><\/strong><strong>), the Middle East\u00a0<\/strong>and<\/span><b>\u00a0North Africa (<span style=\"color: #008000;\">+22.8%<\/span>), and Sub-Saharan Africa (<span style=\"color: #008000;\">+22.6%<\/span>).<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">IFPI&#8217;s report identifies subscription streaming as the key driver of growth globally. A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d-supported streaming formats grew by a modest <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>1.2% YoY.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, IFPI reports that global physical revenues <b>declined<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3.1% YoY<\/span><\/strong> and reached<strong> $4.8 billion<\/strong> in 2024. IFPI points out in its report that t<\/span>his decline &#8220;was set against a very strong performance for the format in 2023, when revenues increased by 14.5%&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-80x47.png\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-80x47.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-160x93.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-320x187.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-418x244.png 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-648x378.png 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/page-1-2-836x488.png 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">This chart has been updated to reflect adjusted retrospective annual figures from IFPI\u2019s GMR 2025<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Global CD and music video revenues fell by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>6.1% YoY<\/strong> <\/span>and <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">15.5% YoY,<\/span><\/strong> respectively, in 2024. These declines were partially offset by revenues generated by vinyl, which grew by <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">4.6% YoY<\/span><\/strong> and marked the format\u2019s 18th consecutive year of growth.<\/p>\n<p>IFPI reports that <strong>Performance<\/strong> <strong>rights<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revenues reached <strong>$2.9 billion<\/strong> in 2024, up by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>5.9% YoY,<\/strong><\/span> marking the fourth successive year of revenue growth.\u00a0 Performance rights revenues represented <strong>9.7% <\/strong>of total recorded music revenues globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(These revenues are collected by Music Licensing Companies and are derived from the use of sound recordings and music video, mostly in public performance and broadcasting).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #3\" data-params=\"dfp_spu3\" id=\"dfp_spu3\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>Geographically, IFPI reports that &#8220;t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here was a positive story&#8221; globally, with t<\/span>hree of the world\u2019s seven regions posting double-digit revenue growth, including the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>IFPI noted that 55 out of 58 markets recorded growth in 2024, which included eight of the Top 10 global markets.<\/p>\n<p>There was also movement in the Top 10 markets in 2024, with <strong>Mexico<\/strong> overtaking <strong>Australia<\/strong> to become the world&#8217;s <strong>tenth-largest<\/strong> recorded music market, which means of course, that Australia officially dropped out of the Top 10 last year.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2024, the world&#8217;s Top 10 biggest recorded music markets are:<\/p>\n<ul><li>1. USA<\/li><li>2. Japan<\/li><li>3. UK<\/li><li>4. Germany<\/li><li>5. China<\/li><li>6. France<\/li><li>7. South Korea<\/li><li>8. Canada<\/li><li>9. Brazil<\/li><li>10. Mexico<\/li><\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a more detailed geographic breakdown of global recorded music revenues in 2024:<\/p>\n<h6>Middle East and North Africa (MENA)<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MENA was the fastest-growing region. Recorded music revenues increased by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>22.8%<\/strong><\/span> there in 2024. Streaming in the MENA region accounted for <strong>99.5%<\/strong> of total revenues.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>USA &amp; Canada<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representing the largest share of global recorded music revenues (<strong>40.3%<\/strong>), the USA and Canada grew <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2.1%<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USA, the world\u2019s single largest recorded music market, posted growth of <strong>2.2% YoY <\/strong>according to IFPI. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada, the world\u2019s eighth-largest market, saw revenue growth of <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>1.5%.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>Europe<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representing more than a quarter of global revenues (<strong>29.5%<\/strong>) after revenue growth of <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>8.3%<\/strong><\/span> in 2024, Europe remained the second largest region in the world for recorded music revenues in 2024. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region\u2019s three largest markets\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">generated revenue growth in 2024: the UK (<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>+4.9%<\/strong><\/span>), Germany (<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">+4.1<\/span>%<\/strong>),<\/span>\u00a0and France (<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">+7.5<\/span>%<\/strong>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>Asia\u00a0<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third largest region globally, revenues in <strong>Asia<\/strong> rose by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>1.3%<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in 2024. IFPI notes that this growth was set against a strong performance in 2023 across both physical and digital formats, where revenues jumped <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>14.4%. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Asia maintained its status as the largest physical market in the world, accounting for <strong>45.1%<\/strong> of global physical revenues in 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>A\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4.9%<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>decline in physical<strong>\u00a0revenues,\u00a0<\/strong>therefore, impacted the region\u2019s overall growth rate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world\u2019s second-largest market, <strong>Japan<\/strong>, was flat year-on-year (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>-0.2%<\/strong><\/span>) [due to a decline in physical revenues], while China, the world&#8217;s fifth-largest global recorded music market, increased revenues by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>9.6%.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>Latin America<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recorded music revenues in <strong>Latin America<\/strong> rose by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>22.5%<\/strong><\/span> in 2024, once again outpacing the global growth rate and marking its 15th consecutive year of growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streaming remained the key driver and accounted for<strong> 87.8%<\/strong> of recorded music revenues in the region. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Brazil<\/strong> grew by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>21.7%<\/strong><\/span> making it the fastest-growing Top 10 market, while Mexico&#8217;s recorded music revenues increased by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>15.6%.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>Australasia\u00a0<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recorded music revenues in Australiasia reached <strong>$629 million<\/strong> and grew by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>6.4%<\/strong><\/span> in 2024. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia&#8217;s revenues increased by <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>6.1%<\/strong><\/span>, but dropped out of the World&#8217;s top 10 recorded markets, replaced by Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New Zealand recorded music revenues grew by<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong> 7.8%.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>Sub-Saharan Africa\u00a0<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recorded music revenues in Sub-Saharan Africa grew<span style=\"color: #008000;\"> <strong>22.6%<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0last year and surpassed <strong>USD $100 million<\/strong> for the first time, reaching <strong>$110 million<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Africa remained the largest market in the region and accounted for <strong>75%<\/strong> of its total revenues, following a growth of <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">14.4% <\/span>in 2024.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--right\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-19-at-12.52.07-80x49.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-19-at-12.52.07-160x98.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-19-at-12.52.07-320x196.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-19-at-12.52.07-418x257.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-19-at-12.52.07-648x398.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-19-at-12.52.07-836x513.jpg 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure>\u201cThese positive developments don\u2019t happen by accident. They reflect the brilliant creativity, vision and hard work of artists and songwriters around the globe, powered in part by the work, investment and passion of record companies and their teams.\u00a0 In the case of record labels, returning revenues enable them to be patient, long-term, consistent investors in artists, innovation and culture.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oakley also highlighted &#8220;one of the key issues&#8221; explored in the new IFPI report: the role of AI in music. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IFPI&#8217;s CEO noted that &#8220;record companies have embraced [AI&#8217;s] potential to enhance artist creativity and develop new and exciting fan experiences&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;However, it is very clear that the developers of generative AI systems &#8216;ingesting&#8217; copyright-protected music to train their models without authorization from the rightsholders pose a very real and present threat to human artistry,&#8221; added Oakley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are asking policymakers to protect music and artistry.
