With the rise of AI in music production, streaming manipulation is becoming increasingly sophisticated.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Beatdapp\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/streaming-fraud-costs-the-global-music-industry-2bn-a-year-according-to-beatdapp-now-its-partnering-with-beatport-to-combat-the-trend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0that streaming fraud takes some\u00a0<strong>$2 billion<\/strong> per year out of the pockets of legitimate rightsholders, as bot-powered fake streams rack up the stream counts that determine who gets paid by streaming services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(UMG <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/streaming-fraud-detection-platform-beatdapp-raises-17m-inks-partnership-with-universal-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partnered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the fraud-detection platform in January last year. Beatdapp uses \u201csophisticated fraud detection filters\u201d to detect stream manipulation.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Meanwhile, over 1 million manipulated tracks are estimated to exist on major streaming platforms like <b>Spotify, Apple Music<\/b>, and\u00a0<b><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background: transparent; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; outline: none !important; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; TIDAL [226 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/tidal\/\">TIDAL<\/a><\/b>, according to\u00a0<b>Pex<\/b>\u2018s\u00a0<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/podcast\/rasty-turek-different-kind-of-streaming-fraud-over-1m-manipulated-tracks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> of copyrighted content. Some of these tracks have garnered millions of listens.<\/p>\n<p>There have been a couple of high-profile cases in recent months regarding individuals accused of and\/or sentenced for committing streaming fraud.<\/p>\n<p>In March last year, for example, a man in Denmark was <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/danish-man-sent-to-prison-over-streaming-fraud-in-case-called-historic-by-artists-groups12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found guilty<\/a>\u00a0of data fraud and copyright infringement after using bots to artificially inflate the stream count on 689 tracks he had uploaded to streaming services including\u00a0<b><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background: transparent; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; outline: none !important; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; Apple Music [1,414 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/apple\/apple-music\/\">Apple Music<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background: transparent; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; outline: none !important; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; Spotify [4,276 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/spotify\/\">Spotify<\/a>,\u00a0<\/b>and<b>\u00a0YouSee Musik.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the individual, who was convicted of orchestrating one of the largest streaming fraud schemes saw his sentence raised to 24 months from 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the US, a North Carolina musician was <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/this-us-musician-allegedly-generated-10m-using-bots-to-rack-up-fake-streams-of-ai-songs-he-could-face-decades-in-prison-for-wire-fraud-and-money-laundering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted<\/a>\u00a0in September for allegedly generating over\u00a0<b>$10 million<\/b>\u00a0in fraudulent royalties using \u201chundreds of thousands of songs\u201d and bot accounts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;UMG\u2019s fraud prevention team is leading the industry by example in fighting the existential threats of streaming fraud and copyright fraud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Universal job ad<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to UMG&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/jobs\/view\/vice-president-global-head-of-fraud-prevention-at-universal-music-group-4215542338\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">job ad for the Vice President, Global Head of Fraud Prevention role,<\/a> the successful candidate will be required to &#8220;envisage and deploy fraud detection systems and current process enhancements.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-80x64.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-80x64.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-160x128.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-320x256.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-418x334.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-648x519.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-836x669.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-19-at-17.23.01-1296x1037.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the ad, the successful candidate will also focus on \u201coversee[ing] implementation of contractual fraud commitments, partner engagement, data and reporting\u201d, as well as \u201cfoster[ing] third-party partnerships\u201d with technology companies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, this role will serve as \u201cthe public face and voice of UMG\u2019s fraud efforts\u201d, and will &#8220;<\/span>Evangelize and Engage In Public Forums, With Trade Bodies and Industry Groups as UMG lead for fraud-related research projects&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The successful candidate will be required to present at trade shows and conferences and publish white papers based on their findings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This person will need &#8220;at least 5 years&#8217; experience at a major record label or DSP&#8221; and &#8220;working experience with copyright, content protection, different types of fraud threats (specifically stream manipulation and copyright infringement).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They will also need &#8220;an operational understanding of the digital music landscape and ecosystem&#8221; plus &#8220;extensive data management and analytical experience to spot trends in fraud and purvey actionable insight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal Music Group has been highly vocal in recent years about its intention to stamp out streaming fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in January 2023, in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sir-lucian-grainge-music-needs-a-new-streaming-payout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-staff memo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge introduced UMG&#8217;s <strong>\u2018artist-centric\u2019 <\/strong>strategy, which <\/span>pushed for updates to the payout models at DSPS. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grainge also called out &#8220;<\/span>bad actors who do not share our commitment to artists and artistry&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;The current environment has attracted players who see an economic opportunity in flooding platforms with all sorts of irrelevant content that deprives both artists and labels from the compensation they deserve<em>&#8220;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In September 2023, a UMG-approved <strong>\u2018artist-centric\u2019 model<\/strong> arrived<a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/popular-artists-to-get-royalty-boost-on-deezer-as-platform-strikes-artist-centric-agreement-with-universal-music-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> at Deezer<\/a>. The platform also pledged to tackle streaming fraud, by \u201ccontinuing to drive an updated, and stricter, proprietary fraud detection system, removing incentives for bad actors, and protecting streaming royalties for artists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"link-relationship\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background: transparent; color: unset !important; text-decoration: none; outline: none !important; border-bottom: 1px dashed #ff7d00;\" title=\"Companies &gt; Spotify [4,276 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/spotify\/\">Spotify<\/a><\/strong> also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/heres-exactly-spotifys-new-1000-annual-streams-royalty-policy-works123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embraced elements<\/a> of UMG&#8217;s \u2018artist-centric\u2019 royalties model as part of major changes <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-is-embracing-elements-of-universal-music-groups-artist-centric-royalties-model-following-a-new-multi-year-licensing-deal-between-umg-and-daniel-eks-platf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to its own service<\/a> launched in Q1 last year, which included various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/spotify-is-embracing-elements-of-universal-music-groups-artist-centric-royalties-model-following-a-new-multi-year-licensing-deal-between-umg-and-daniel-eks-platf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud-prevention measures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p>Writing in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/read-sir-lucian-grainges-2025-memo-to-universal-music-group-staff-the-streaming-2-0-era-has-arrived1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recent New Year memo<\/a> (published in January 2025) \u2013 in which Grainge confirmed the arrival of what he calls \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/read-sir-lucian-grainges-2025-memo-to-universal-music-group-staff-the-streaming-2-0-era-has-arrived1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the\u00a0<strong>Streaming 2.0<\/strong> era<\/a>\u201d \u2013 he noted that UMG&#8217;s &#8220;work in driving these artist-centric principles will continue in 2025&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;When we introduced that strategy two years ago, we immediately went to work with our partners to make it a reality.\u00a0 In a matter of months, we reached agreements in principle on a number of issues: increasing the monetization of artists\u2019 music; limiting the gaming of the system by protecting against fraud and content saturation; and focusing on the value of authentic artist-fan relationships, inspiring the development of more engaging consumer experiences, including specially designed new products and premium tiers for superfans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Platforms as diverse as Deezer, Spotify, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-and-tiktok-strike-new-licensing-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-and-meta-ink-new-global-deal-covering-facebook-instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-group-and-amazon-music-ink-new-deal-covering-exclusive-content-and-with-streaming-2-0-at-its-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recently Amazon<\/a>, have adopted artist-centric principles in a wide variety of ways \u2014 principles that benefit the <em>entire<\/em> music industry from DIY to independent to major label artists and songwriters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grainge continued: &#8220;Not only do we want to ensure that artists are protected and rewarded, but we\u2019re also going after bad actors who are actively engaged in nefarious behavior such as large-scale copyright infringement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He also revealed that UMG is &#8220;setting forth the best practices that every responsible platform, distributor and aggregator should adopt: content filtering;
