Among superstar artists, the share of touring fell from <strong>44%<\/strong> in 2022 to <strong>36%<\/strong> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The survey defined a \u201ctouring artist\u201d as one who performed at least 10 shows in the space of a year.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-80x60.png\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-80x60.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-160x120.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-320x239.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-418x312.png 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-648x484.png 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2025\/05\/touring-artists-836x625.png 836w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Source: Chartmetric<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Chartmetric\u2019s report blamed the phenomenon on a number of factors, including rising travel and accommodation costs, low ticket sales for some artists\u2019 shows, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/entertainment\/articles\/2025-03-14\/visa-fee-hikes-and-delays-hinder-international-artists-from-touring-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massive increase<\/a> in visa application fees for foreign musicians in the US, which last year rose to <strong>$1,615<\/strong> per musician, from <strong>$460<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other factors that may be playing a role in this include a shrinking number of smaller venues, which may be most pronounced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/podcast\/the-uks-live-music-venue-crisis-is-reaching-a-boiling-point-and-it-could-spread-to-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/live-dma.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/7-PROGRAMMING-Live-music-challenges-in-european-cities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elsewhere in Europe<\/a>. News reports suggest that artists are playing a smaller number of shows on tours and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c04p27gkyd6o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skipping more cities and towns<\/a> than they used to, amid a growing shortage of venues.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the superstar end of the market, Chartmetric\u2019s data backs up anecdotal evidence of declining demand for some tours: Witness, for example, last year\u2019s tour cancellations by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/conormurray\/2024\/05\/31\/jennifer-lopez-cancels-troubled-this-is-me-live-tour-amid-poor-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Lopez<\/a><\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/the-black-keys-cancel-arena-tour-planning-to-downsize-venues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Black Keys<\/strong><\/a> amid lower-than-expected ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p>However, the data overall paints a decidedly mixed picture. In its latest earnings report, concert giant <strong>Live Nation<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/live-nation-posts-q1-revenue-decline-but-says-2025-will-be-historic-year-for-live-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> a double-digit percentage increase in ticket sales, to <strong>95 million<\/strong> as of mid-April. Stadium ticket sales were up <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>80%<\/strong><\/span> compared to the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just emerging artists opting out&#8230; Mid-level and even superstar performers are also seeing a noticeable decline in their tour schedules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Chartmetric<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>CEO <strong>Michael Rapino<\/strong> said of a potential pullback in consumer demand: \u201cWe haven\u2019t felt it at all yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, in a recent Q&amp;A session, Live Nation CFO <strong>Joe Berchtold<\/strong> indicated that the company is not in a phase where it\u2019s aggressively raising prices.
