and that &#8220;There is nothing that exempts AI technology from copyright law or that excuses AI companies from playing by the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Suno and Udio<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/as-suno-and-udio-admit-training-ai-with-unlicensed-music-record-industry-says-theres-nothing-fair-about-stealing-an-artists-lifes-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> have previously argued<\/a> that their use of copyrighted materials<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>falls under the \u201cfair use\u201d exemption to US copyright law.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #1\" data-params=\"dfp_spu1\" id=\"dfp_spu1\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p><em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-06-01\/record-labels-in-talks-to-license-music-to-ai-firms-udio-suno?embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">points out<\/a> the complexity of the reported talks between labels and Udio and Suno.<\/p>\n<p>The music companies want &#8220;greater control over the use of their work,&#8221; <em>Bloomberg<\/em> writes, while the AI platforms seek &#8220;flexibility to experiment&#8221; as well as &#8220;deals at a price reasonable for startup companies&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Bloomberg <\/i>said Udio and Suno did not respond to requests for comment, while the three music majors declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, Suno <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/ai-music-generator-suno-raises-125m-valuing-company-at-500m-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised<\/a><b> $125 million<\/b> from investors including <b>Lightspeed Venture Partners, <\/b>giving the Massachusetts-headquartered company<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/music-generator-suno-raises-capital-at-500-million-valuation-altman-went-behind-her-back\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> an implied value of $500 million.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Udio, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/new-ai-powered-instant-music-making-app-udio-raises-10m-launches-with-backing-from-will-i-am-common-unitedmasters-a16z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secured<\/a> <b>$10 million<\/b> from <b>Andreessen Horowitz<\/b> and other backers, reflecting investor confidence in AI music generation despite the legal challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The reported licensing talks with Udio and Suno follows licensing agreements struck between <b>ChatGPT<\/b> developer <b>OpenAI<\/b> and companies like<b><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.newscorp.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/news-corp-and-openai-sign-landmark-multi-year-global-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> News Corp.<\/a>, <\/b>the<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/openai-chatgpt-associated-press-ap-f86f84c5bcc2f3b98074b38521f5f75a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> Associated Press <\/b><\/a>and<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voxmedia.com\/2024\/5\/29\/24166483\/vox-media-openai-strategic-content-and-product-partnership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Vox Media<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Music industry executives have expressed cautious optimism about AI technology while defending copyright protections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last year, when record companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riaa.com\/record-companies-bring-landmark-cases-for-responsible-ai-againstsuno-and-udio-in-boston-and-new-york-federal-courts-respectively\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20music%20community%20has%20embraced,Chairman%20and%20CEO%20Mitch%20Glazier.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brought legal action<\/a> against Suno and Udio, <b>Mitch Glazier<\/b>, Chief executive officer of the RIAA, said: \u201cThe music community has embraced AI, and we are already partnering and collaborating with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity that put artists and songwriters in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe music community has embraced AI, and we are already partnering and collaborating with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity that put artists and songwriters in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Mitch Glazier<\/b>, RIAA<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBut we can only succeed if developers are willing to work together with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>In an analysis published by MBW last April, Ed Newton-Rex, <\/b>founder of ethical AI organization Fairly Trained, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/yes-udios-output-resembles-copyrighted-music-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified<\/a> similarities between Udio-generated music and works from established artists, including <b>John Lennon, Natalie Imbruglia, <\/b>and<b> Coldplay<\/b>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>It followed Newton-Rex\u2019s <a class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/suno-is-a-music-ai-company-aiming-to-generate-120-billion-per-year-newton-rex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> into the output of generative AI music platform, Suno, which went viral in the music biz after it was published on MBW earlier that same month.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Suno is also facing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/500m-valued-suno-hit-with-new-copyright-lawsuit-from-germanys-gema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>copyright infringement <\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/500m-valued-suno-hit-with-new-copyright-lawsuit-from-germanys-gema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Germany, filed in January 2025 by<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/gema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GEMA<\/a>, the German collection society and licensing body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Suno&#8217;s controversial reputation hasn&#8217;t stopped it from striking headline-grabbing partnerships.
