Grammy-winning artist Wyclef Jean<\/b> has partnered with Jaeson Ma<\/b>, co-founder of Asian music collective 88rising<\/b>, to launch OpenWav<\/b>, a platform that promises artists higher earnings via fan engagements.<\/p>\n
The startup, based in Los Angeles, was launched on Wednesday (June 11) during A2IM Indie Week<\/b> in New York City, with backing from creator economy-focused fund Connect Ventures, Warner Music Group, Goodwater Capital, Soma Capital, SuperScrypt, Dragonfly, Galaxy Interactive, <\/b>and Animoca Brands.<\/b><\/p>\n
Wyclef Jean will serve as Chief Music Officer, while Jaeson Ma <\/b>will serve as Chief Executive Officer of the new company.<\/p>\n
Wyclef Jean, the Haitian-American musician who co-founded The Fugees<\/b> and produced hits for Destiny’s Child<\/b> and Shakira<\/b>, has also founded<\/a> other music ventures including Carnival World Music Group<\/b>, which provides creative artists with music publishing and distribution resources.<\/p>\n He has also invested<\/a> in companies like AI voice platform Kits.AI<\/b><\/a>, and helped launch<\/a> a suite of new music tools dubbed \u2018Music AI Sandbox\u2019 for Google and YouTube.<\/p>\n \u201cThe music industry is broken. Most artists can\u2019t make a living off streams, and social media rewards clout, not connection. OpenWav was built to change that.”<\/p>\n Jaeson Ma, OpenWav<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Ma, meanwhile, is the founder of East West Ventures<\/b>, a brand strategy and investment firm, and 88rising<\/b>, a music platform and record label primarily for Asian American artists. He also co-founded Stampede Ventures<\/b>, an independent entertainment media company with franchises across film, television, and digital.<\/p>\n OpenWav says Ma has raised capital and advised on deals totaling over $1 billion<\/b>.<\/p>\n Ma said: \u201cThe music industry is broken. Tu has worked with brands like Nike, Beats by Dre <\/b>and Google.<\/b><\/p>\n Veteran music manager Madeline Nelson<\/b> also joined OpenWav as senior advisor, bringing three decades of experience including roles at Sony Music Entertainment <\/b>and Amazon<\/b>‘s music division.<\/p>\n Nelson recently founded Purple Cow Innovation<\/b>, an entertainment agency staffed entirely by women. She also served as SVP at Donna Karan\u2019s Urban Zen Foundation<\/b>, and is the co-founder of music jingle\/ scoring company.
