The publishers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/music-publishers-sue-twitter-for-250m-alleging-rampant-infringement-of-copyrighted-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> X, formerly <b>Twitter<\/b>, in June 2023, alleging \u201crampant infringement of copyrighted music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The latest court order gives a 90-day pause to both parties as they try to settle the dispute outside of court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Metallica\u2019s copyright strike reflects the band\u2019s approach to protecting their IP. In 2000, Metallica <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/metallica-just-put-entire-new-album-youtube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> <b>Napster<\/b> over copyright infringmenet, seeking a minimum of<b> $10 million<\/b> in damages, or<b> $100,000 <\/b>per illegally downloaded song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__spu\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-name=\"300x250 Sponsor MPU #2\" data-params=\"dfp_spu2\" id=\"dfp_spu2\"><\/div>      <\/div>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Rolling Stone <\/i>noted that Metallica has had a complicated relationship with the military over the use of their music. During the Iraq War, the band reportedly asked the military to stop using their songs during interrogations. <b>Lars<\/b> <b>Ulrich<\/b>, the band&#8217;s drummer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2016\/11\/metallica-new-album-hardwired-lars-ulrich-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <i>Vulture<\/i> in 2016 that while such uses made him &#8220;squirm,&#8221; artists have limited control once their music \u201cgoes out into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ulrich at the time said: \u201cI\u2019ve had to sit there and answer questions like, \u2018How do you feel about the US military using your songs to torture prisoners?\u2019 I mean, as much as that makes me squirm, when you hand those recording master tapes to the FedEx guy and then the music goes out into the world, you\u2019ve gotta let it go. Whether people like it or hate it, you just find a way to deal with it.
