He&#8217;s about to make history as the second one, too.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jon-platt-warner-music-group-breaking-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jon-platt-warner-music-group-breaking-story\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781463000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGiaa4fBodIjaeWVexCb02X88eZMg\">MBW reported on Friday<\/a>, the widely-respected Platt is about to ascend to the biggest job in music publishing. Multiple sources now tell us he will succeed his one-time mentor, Martin Bandier, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/martin-bandier-confirms-hell-be-leaving-sony-atv-in-march-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/martin-bandier-confirms-hell-be-leaving-sony-atv-in-march-2019\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781463000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEvpC6C480z5__d-5NUsgWGBY80dg\">chief of Sony\/ATV in March next year.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareinstrumental.com\/get-a-demo\/utm_source=mbw&amp;utm_medium=mbw&amp;utm_campaign=MBW_endtext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/instrumental_mbw_628_90_v2-1.gif\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/instrumental_mbw_628_90_v2-1.gif\" ><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Since Platt was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jon-platt-replace-cameron-strang-warnerchappell-ceo-next-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named CEO of Warner\/Chappell in 2015<\/a>, taking over from Cameron Strang, his results have spoken for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>A snapshot: Warner\/Chappell&#8217;s quarterly market share of the United States&#8217; Top 100 radio hits grew from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/6480028\/taylor-swift-shake-it-off-publishing-industry-fourth-quarter-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/6480028\/taylor-swift-shake-it-off-publishing-industry-fourth-quarter-2014&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781463000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEGkejKOIIND0nzaztkpkiFRPQfzw\">13.3%<\/a>\u00a0in Q4 2014 to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/8097545\/publishers-quarterly-sonyatv-reclaims-no-1-spot-in-fourth-quarter-of-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/business\/8097545\/publishers-quarterly-sonyatv-reclaims-no-1-spot-in-fourth-quarter-of-2017&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEzrLgK_KxhgPSAuv9phAyhcUaJjA\">20.53%<\/a>\u00a0in Q4 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the company&#8217;s FY revenues in the two years from 2015 to 2017 jumped 18.7% to $572m &#8211; while US-specific sales increased 35.1% to $258m.<\/p>\n<p>And in FY2018, the 12 months to end of September 2018, Warner\/Chappell looks likely to break through the $600m revenue barrier for the first time in a decade.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-80x60.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-418x314.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-648x486.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-836x627.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/IMG_1118-1296x972.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Warner\/Chappell&#8217;s owner, Warner Music Group, thinks so much of Platt that, less than a year ago, he was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/shake-up-on-warners-board-max-lousada-and-jon-platt-in-cameron-strang-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/shake-up-on-warners-board-max-lousada-and-jon-platt-in-cameron-strang-out\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGSww9uk9ShZrJ--aNfhgMUkQ5KZQ\">granted a seat on its board.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Platt is sacrificing this prestigious position for Sony, and you can see why: the exec is joining Sony\/ATV at a particularly exciting time in the history of the world&#8217;s largest publishing company.<\/p>\n<p>For starters, if\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-buys-60-stake-in-emi-music-publishing-for-2-3bn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMI Music Publishing becomes fully consolidated into its setup<\/a>, Sony&#8217;s annual global music publishing turnover would end up at comfortably more than double that of Warner\/Chappell&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a scenario which would see Sony&#8217;s multi-rights music operation balloon to its biggest size in history.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also a scenario which would see Sony get closer to Universal Music Group&#8217;s industry dominance than many recently thought possible.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-80x60.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-418x314.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-648x486.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-836x627.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/09\/SonyplusEMI-1296x972.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Over the past three and a half years, according to MBW&#8217;s calculations, Sony has splashed more than<strong>\u00a0$3.7bn<\/strong>\u00a0on music rights-related acquisitions.<\/p>\n<p>This figure includes the $750m it spent buying the 50% in Sony\/ATV it didn&#8217;t already own, in a deal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-corporation-completes-sonyatv-buy-bandier-hails-terrific-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">completed in October 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also, obviously, includes the $2.59bn it spent on buying the 70% in EMI Music Publishing it didn&#8217;t already own, across two separate deals: (i) with a Mubadala-led consortium (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-buys-60-stake-in-emi-music-publishing-for-2-3bn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-buys-60-stake-in-emi-music-publishing-for-2-3bn\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHcdcGPzDqOsvXkFtHETWOIYbCn6w\">$2.3bn<\/a>); and (ii) with the Jackson Estate (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-corp-snaps-up-remaining-10-stake-in-emi-music-publishing-from-jackson-estate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-corp-snaps-up-remaining-10-stake-in-emi-music-publishing-from-jackson-estate\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFDpgO7udWhuNLu2Ph4y_VayseCQQ\">$287.5m<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>On the recorded music side, Sony\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-fully-acquires-the-orchard-in-200m-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-fully-acquires-the-orchard-in-200m-deal\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGRfV-UL1q4iq9Pfn7OZ2fy0OP1TQ\">acquired the 50% in The Orchard it didn&#8217;t already own in 2016 for $200m<\/a>, and has since bought\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/ministry-of-sound-to-sony-music-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/ministry-of-sound-to-sony-music-uk\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFOvFOTzgwnyRIhEbCaXCdKbtGQ_A\">Ministry Of Sound (GBP \u00a367m)<\/a>\u00a0plus a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-spends-86m-on-50-stake-in-simon-cowells-syco-holdings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-spends-86m-on-50-stake-in-simon-cowells-syco-holdings\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGGuf1MmxtGtEJ_6IEfORiE9LVJfQ\">50% stake in Simon Cowell&#8217;s Syco Holdings (\u00a386.5m).<\/a>\u00a0That&#8217;s not to mention further separate buyouts of Century Media,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/the-orchard-bolsters-distribution-might-europe-finetunes-phonofile-acquisition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/the-orchard-bolsters-distribution-might-europe-finetunes-phonofile-acquisition\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGmof2EuB2jC7xi_x-qdGhcDQdMtw\">\u00a0Phonofile<\/a>, Essential Music + Marketing and Finetunes.<\/p>\n<p>Compare that to Universal, which snapped up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-completes-acquisition-of-emi-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMI Music for $1.9bn in 2012<\/a>, but was then forced to sell off Parlophone by the EC (to Warner) for $765m, bringing the net expenditure of that deal down to approximately $1.14bn.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, after scaring the EU regulatory horses, UMG has remained understandably quiet in the M+A space, save a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-acquires-japans-full-stack-music-business-office-augusta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">couple of smaller bits and bobs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conclusion: Universal is still, across recorded and publishing, king of global<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sonys-emi-buyout-wont-make-it-the-biggest-music-company-but-it-will-become-the-biggest-publisher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sonys-emi-buyout-wont-make-it-the-biggest-music-company-but-it-will-become-the-biggest-publisher\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFFMDlJPMHUbuE3b6tSrc-v1Wjcwg\">\u00a0music rights<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; but Sony is aggressively closing the gap.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-80x60.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-160x120.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-418x314.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-648x486.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-836x627.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2018\/05\/IMG_0971-1296x972.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Time sure moves fast.<\/p>\n<p>For a minute, back in early 2017, it looked possible that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/future-hold-sonys-music-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/future-hold-sonys-music-companies\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537302781464000&amp;usg=AFQjCNETlqwEUwaAFBLkKZ2UTpqY6B-d0w\">Sony Corporation might even consider selling off<\/a>\u00a0its holdings in music.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, it chose a different strategy: locking in full ownership of its existing rights (at a cost of $2bn-plus) while also splashing the cash on third parties &#8211; and stabilizing its management team.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Stringer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/rob-stringer-named-sony-music-boss-doug-morris-becomes-chairman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">became global head of Sony&#8217;s recorded music empire<\/a> in April 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Stringer himself has gained a new boss: ex-Sony Corp CEO Kaz Hirai was succeeded by\u00a0Kenichiro Yoshida in April this year.<\/p>\n<p>From Q1 2019, Jon Platt will form a crucial part of this new-look worldwide Sony music management team.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--right\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/02\/alt-80x45.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/02\/alt-160x90.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/02\/alt-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/02\/alt-418x235.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2015\/02\/alt-648x365.jpg 648w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure><p>All efforts at Sony, for now, will be focused on getting its $2bn-plus EMI Music Publishing deals over the line.<\/p>\n<p>IMPALA, the independent trade body which was a thorn in Universal&#8217;s side when it was attempting to buy EMI Music, is at it again.<\/p>\n<p>The organization has officially complained to European regulators over Sony&#8217;s proposed EMI acquisition, citing what it claims are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/impala-raises-concerns-over-sony-and-emi-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> &#8220;serious competition issues&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Should Sony emerge from this challenge unscathed, its attention will surely shift, pretty swiftly, to Spotify.<\/p>\n<p>Sony&#8217;s recorded music contract with the world&#8217;s biggest streaming service will expire by this time next year, say sources.<\/p>\n<p>If Sony can now &#8211; fully in control of both its recorded music and publishing entities &#8211; get its act (and acts) together, it would make for an intimidating opponent during these negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Ek&#8217;s business affairs gurus (as well as their counterparts at YouTube, Apple, Facebook etc.) surely won&#8217;t relish crunch talks with three major labels who operate side-by-side with their sister publishing companies.<\/p>\n<p>This would be new territory for Sony: Marty Bandier&#8217;s team previously negotiated completely unilaterally at Sony\/ATV, due to that company&#8217;s fragmented ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, next year, Sony Corp&#8217;s two key music divisions could finally &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/a-lot-of-people-in-the-music-business-give-a-good-meeting-we-get-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lucrative pre-2010 catalog.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are headlines yet to be written in this game of executive musical chairs.<\/p>\n<p>Marty Bandier, for example, told staff today (September 17) that he has new moves to announce. Bandier certainly knows where the bodies are buried in the blockbuster publishing business &#8211; not to mention when key copyrights are expiring.<\/p>\n<p>Could we soon see a Bandier-fronted private equity \/ VC fund join those managed by the likes of Primary Wave, Round Hill, Kobalt Capital et all in the acquisitive music publishing space?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s not forget, either, that Jon Platt leaves behind an empty throne at Warner\/Chappell.<\/p>\n<p>His recently-appointed No.2, ex-SONGS partner Carianne Marshall, is definitely in the running to succeed him &#8211; with sources suggesting that WMG&#8217;s management team have been impressed by her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/carianne-marshall-named-coo-of-warner-chappell-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">since she arrived in April.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is one very obvious free agent that WMG might like a chat with, too: Matt Pincus, founder of SONGS and Marshall&#8217;s long-time ally, is currently biding his time by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/songs-founder-matt-pincus-now-advising-snapchat-working-with-liontree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> advising Liontree and Snapchat<\/a>, after building one of the most successful independent music companies of the past 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>Guy Moot, Sony\/ATV&#8217;s widely-respected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/guy-moot-promoted-president-worldwide-creative-sonyatv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President of Worldwide Creative<\/a>, would also surely think hard about the opportunity at Warner\/Chappell should the call come his way.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>For now, though, the trade media ink rightly belongs to &#8216;Big&#8217; Jon Platt &#8211; the former DJ who was once, in his hometown, warned by Public Enemy&#8217;s Chuck D: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/a-lot-of-people-in-the-music-business-give-a-good-meeting-we-get-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>&#8220;You\u2019re the man in Denver. But unless you dream bigger, that\u2019s all you\u2019re ever gonna be.\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Platt dreamed much, much bigger &#8211; and has soared much, much higher &#8211; than many back then, including the man himself, may have dared contemplate.<\/p>\n<p>During his time at Warner, Platt has proven himself as a truly global leader, hiring impressive new MDs in key territories like the UK and Spain, bringing in a new COO and CFO, and elevating young exec talent like Ryan Press, Katie Vinten and Eric Mackay.<\/p>\n<p>Platt initially landed at Warner\/Chappell in 2012 following 17 years at EMI Music Publishing, where\u00a0he signed an astonishing run of young writer\/artists on their way up. They included Jay Z, Kanye West, Usher, Pharrell and Sean &#8216;Puffy&#8217; Combs.<\/p>\n<p>Combs has already publicly congratulated his friend on his new job \u2013 and his words speak volumes:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Congratulations to my brother Big Jon Platt.
