Is this a wake-up call for the future?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sweden has long been a harbinger of trends which affect the global music business \u2013 whether it&#8217;s the advent of torrent-based downloads via The Pirate Bay, or the birth of mainstream audio streaming via Spotify.<\/p>\n<p>The latest data coming out of the market should certainly be monitored very closely by major labels because, if it starts to bite on a global scale, it&#8217;s going to cause some headaches.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__tweeny hidden-xs hidden-ms hidden-sm\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"992 1200 1440\" data-name=\"628x90 Sponsor banner #5 (992+1200+1440)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__banner mb-advert__banner--inline hidden-xs hidden-sm hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"480\" data-name=\"468x60 Sponsor banner #5 (480)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__mobile mb-advert__mobile--inline hidden-ms hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"320 768\" data-name=\"300x50 Sponsor banner #5 (320+768)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p>Driven by the popularity of local hip-hop, the market share of independently-distributed artists on Spotify&#8217;s Top 50 daily chart in Sweden hit an all-time high earlier this month, rising to 44% (i.e. 22 tracks out of 50) on September 5.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s according to independent distribution and services company Amuse, which is based in Stockholm but operates globally.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Amuse&#8217;s analysis, provided to MBW this week, suggests that an <em>average<\/em> of 38% of Spotify&#8217;s daily Top 50 chart in Sweden so far this month has been claimed by indie artist tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Although this figure has been dragged up by some big-league recent independent album releases (from artists like Ein\u00e1r, Dree Low and Ant Wan), it&#8217;s not likely to delight those running the globe&#8217;s biggest record companies.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/image-1-80x49.png\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/image-1-80x49.png 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/image-1-160x99.png 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/image-1-320x198.png 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/image-1-418x258.png 418w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Diego Farias, co-founder and CEO of Amuse, told MBW: \u201cWhile the DIY artist market is exploding, major labels still dominate the charts to a high degree. We think this is an interesting local trend to watch as we\u2019re seeing independent music finally start to crossover to have a significant share on the charts as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This past week, Amuse had seven platform tracks on Sweden\u2019s Spotify Top 50 list, whereas one of them was No.1 [Dree Low&#8217;s <em>PIPPI<\/em>]. Amuse had 15 tracks on the Spotify Top 100 which equals 15% market share on the list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotifycharts.com\/regional\/se\/daily\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotify&#8217;s official daily chart in Sweden<\/a>, Dree Low&#8217;s <em>PIPPI<\/em> returned to the No.1 spot yesterday (September 29), dethroning the Elektra\/Warner-released<em> Dance Monkey<\/em> by Tones &amp; <em>Digster Fresh<\/em> at No.19 (-126); Filtr&#8217;s <em>Hits Just Nu<\/em> at No.20 (-127); and Filtr&#8217;s <em>Nya Hits<\/em> at No.28 (-188).<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Spotify&#8217;s own <em>Reading Soundtrack<\/em>, at No.2, has surged, up by 10,628 followers; it currently boasts a total of 715,753.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reading Soundtrack<\/em> is stuffed with music from acts that fit the bill of so-called &#8216;Fake Artists&#8217; \u2013 i.e. self-releasing artists who have little to no other presence on the internet bar their Spotify catalogs.<\/p>\n<p>Just six of the 104 tracks currently on <em>Reading Soundtrack<\/em>, or 5.8%, appear to come from major and major-distributed labels, including Sony Classics and Disney Music Group.<\/p>\n<p>Another playlist that matches this description is <em>Floating Through Space<\/em>, the No.11-most-followed playlist on Spotify in Sweden, which contains zero major label tracks amongst its list of 84 recordings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-80x33.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-80x33.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-160x67.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-320x133.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-418x174.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-648x270.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-836x348.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2019\/09\/Screen-Shot-2019-09-30-at-19.22.08-1296x540.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/a><\/figure><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Interestingly, these two playlists perform especially well when Spotify&#8217;s playlists in Sweden are ranked in terms of Average Monthly Listeners (AML), as opposed to followers (which some argue is a misleading metric).<\/p>\n<p>The No.1 most popular playlist in Sweden in terms of AML (see above) is <em>Hits Idag<\/em> (Today&#8217;s Hits) with 66,789 AML, followed by <em>Reading Soundtrack<\/em> on 62,449.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lugnt &amp; Sk\u00f6nt<\/em> (Quiet &amp; Nice), a personalized playlist, sits at No.3, with a tracklist containing over 50% non-major label content, according to ChartMetric data. <em>Floating Through<\/em> <em>Space<\/em> comes in at No.6 most popular in terms of AML.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden&#8217;s key local hip-hop playlist, <em>100<\/em>, contains just 12 major label tracks amongst its 70-strong list, according to MBW analysis of ChartMetric data\u00a0\u2013 equivalent to 82.9% independent music.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>None of this has gone unnoticed by senior major label figures speaking to MBW in the past week, one of whom accused Spotify of &#8220;actively channelling&#8221;
