{"id":72468,"date":"2019-10-23T19:15:14","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T18:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=72468"},"modified":"2021-01-09T12:52:02","modified_gmt":"2021-01-09T12:52:02","slug":"is-one-sony-finally-becoming-a-creative-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/is-one-sony-finally-becoming-a-creative-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Is &#8216;One Sony&#8217; finally becoming a creative reality?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have genuinely lost count of the number of high-ranking Sony Music executives over the past decade who have sold me the &#8220;One Sony&#8221; dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that phrase is news to you, allow me to enlighten: In a bid to differentiate itself from its key competition (Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group), Sony\u2019s recorded music division has long tried to spin the idea that it is uniquely connected to Sony Corp&#8217;s other powerful owned-media divisions \u2013 most particularly Sony Pictures (movies and TV) and Sony Game &amp; Network Services (including PlayStation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By and large, however, &#8220;One Sony&#8221; has wound up as a nice idea on paper \u2013 and a glitzy prospect to dangle in front of artists who might sign to Sony labels like Columbia, RCA or Epic \u2013 but has never meaningfully pushed the envelope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s been a particularly cheery tale for Sony to tell following the painful hangover of Apple&#8217;s iPod usurping and ultimately cannibalizing Sony&#8217;s Walkman \u2013 the last time that the Japanese corporation&#8217;s credentials in both music and technology coalesced to dominant effect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, in recent years, the most significant outcome of &#8220;One Sony&#8221; has tended to be smaller scale, namely Sony Music artists soundtracking the advertising efforts of other Sony properties \u2013 for example, a global <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u8sRSWZKIwQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony Bravia OLED TV ad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from last year which propelled the career of Brit singer\/songwriter breakthrough Tom Walker.<\/span><\/p>\n      <div class=\"mb-advert__incontent\">      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__tweeny hidden-xs hidden-ms hidden-sm\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"992 1200 1440\" data-name=\"628x90 Sponsor banner #5 (992+1200+1440)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_628\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__banner mb-advert__banner--inline hidden-xs hidden-sm hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"480\" data-name=\"468x60 Sponsor banner #5 (480)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_468\"><\/div>      <div class=\"mb-advert mb-advert__mobile mb-advert__mobile--inline hidden-ms hidden-md hidden-lg\" data-loaded=\"no\" data-sizes=\"320 768\" data-name=\"300x50 Sponsor banner #5 (320+768)\" data-params=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\" id=\"dfp_sponsor5_300\"><\/div>      <\/div>      \n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Right now, however, there is evidence<\/strong> that &#8220;One Sony&#8221; may finally be showing signs of delivering on its huge potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of that is down to a fresh corporate structure. For many years, New York-based Sony Music sat under the umbrella of Sony Entertainment \u2013 a now-dissolved division which housed Sony Corp&#8217;s recorded music activities alongside its film and TV companies. Things have changed: following the departure of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-entertainment-boss-michael-lynton-quits-for-snap-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony Entertainment boss Michael Lynton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2017, in August this year, Sony Corp switched up its hierarchy by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/rob-stringer-to-run-new-sony-music-group-housing-publishing-and-records-from-august-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating Sony Music Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Housing both records and publishing at Sony worldwide (ex-Japan), and led by CEO &amp; Chairman (and ex-Columbia Records boss) Rob Stringer, SMG reports directly into Sony Corp HQ in Tokyo \u2013 finally, for the first time, putting Sony&#8217;s artists and songwriters on the same corporate level as the likes of Sony PlayStation and Sony Home Entertainment and Sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Already, collaborations between these divisions look more consequential. For starters, there&#8217;s Sony&#8217;s &#8220;360 Reality Audio&#8221; format, which promises to revolutionize the audio quality of mainstream digital services, and has already been adopted by platforms including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/sony-360-reality-audio-experience-to-launch-soon-with-amazon-music-hd-deezer-nugs-net-and-tidal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Music, TIDAL and Deezer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8220;immersive&#8221; audio format will launch in late fall this year across 1,000 songs \u2013 amongst which, it was announced last week, you&#8217;ll find classics from Bruce Springsteen, Mark Ronson, Billy Joel and Pharrell Williams&#8230; artists who also happen to be signed to Sony Music. (That being said, others in the music industry are impressed by the format, including Sony rival Warner Music Group, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/rob-stringer-sony-music-is-rolling-out-titles-across-our-vast-catalog-for-360-reality-audio-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has signed up to support the launch.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharrell is a particularly interesting case study for &#8220;One Sony&#8221;: As well as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/rob-stringer-sony-music-is-rolling-out-titles-across-our-vast-catalog-for-360-reality-audio-experience\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joining Rob Stringer and Sony Corp CEO Kenichiro Yoshida on stage in Las Vegas at CES in January<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to announce &#8220;360 Reality Audio,&#8221; the Neptunes star is also working in partnership with Sony Corp on a number of other yet-to-be revealed devices and tech innovations that Stringer says will \u201cbring together music and the other platforms at Sony.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Another major new non-music project<\/strong> in which Sony Music Group has played an active role is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death Stranding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a much-hyped &#8220;open world&#8221; action-adventure video game due for launch on PlayStation 4 in November.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built by a team led by legendary game developer Hideo Kojima (creator of the classic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metal Gear Solid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series), the Sony-published <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death Stranding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is an ambitious, filmic title which stars acting talents such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Walking Dead&#8217;s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norman Reedus and Saturn Award-winning <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannibal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">star Mads Mikkelsen. It has been dubbed &#8220;frighteningly beautiful&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/erikkain\/2019\/10\/04\/death-stranding-is-frighteningly-beautiful-in-this-new-cinematic-story-trailer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Forbes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony Music is working on the official soundtrack to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death Stranding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released as a standalone album<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <em>Death Stranding: Timefall<\/em>, by RCA Records on November 7. Major league Sony-signed artists such as Khalid, Alan Walker and Bring Me The Horizon have contributed original recordings to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death Stranding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 many of which are integrated into the game\u2019s standout moments as you play.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--right\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-14-at-13.45.09-80x45.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-14-at-13.45.09-160x90.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-14-at-13.45.09-320x180.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-14-at-13.45.09-418x235.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-06-14-at-13.45.09-648x364.jpg 648w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure><p>&#8220;[Death Stranding] innovates for the first time on how music is embedded in a video game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rob Stringer, Sony Music<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony Music Group CEO &amp; Chairman, Rob Stringer, told an audience at Goldman Sachs&#8217; Communacopia event in New York last month that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death Stranding<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will &#8220;innovate for the first time on how music is embedded in a game,&#8221; and that SMG will be working closely with PlayStation to promote the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timefall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> album. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a project that Sony insiders tell me is being seen as an important benchmark of increased creative collaboration between PlayStation and Sony Music Group, ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 5 console in 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elsewhere, Epic-signed Camila Cabello is set to play the lead role in a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/film\/news\/camila-cabello-cinderella-movie-1203185227\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">movie retelling of Cinderella from Sony Pictures<\/a>, for which she will also be involved in the soundtrack. Additionally starring Idina Menzel and Billy Porter, and co-produced by James Corden, it&#8217;s slated for release in early 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tom Mackay<\/strong>, who spent 19 years in senior roles at Republic Records, quit that label two years ago to join Rob Stringer and Sony Music in the newly-created position of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/tom-mackay-leaves-republic-after-19-years-to-join-sony-as-president-film-television-ar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President, Sony Music Film and Television A&amp;R<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
