{"id":79196,"date":"2020-03-02T21:08:58","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T21:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?p=79196"},"modified":"2020-03-02T21:39:41","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T21:39:41","slug":"diy-artists-generated-821m-in-2019-and-amuse-is-launching-a-pro-subscription-tier-just-for-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/diy-artists-generated-821m-in-2019-and-amuse-is-launching-a-pro-subscription-tier-just-for-them\/","title":{"rendered":"DIY artists generated $821m in 2019 \u2013 now Amuse is launching a Pro subscription tier to &#8216;accelerate their careers&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amuse has fast become one of the most recognizable names in the independent artist market \u2013 not least as the Swedish-born company offers a completely free, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amuse.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no-frills digital distribution service<\/a> for DIY acts.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Amuse&#8217;s business model was essentially two-tiered: the firm would monitor the artists uploading their music via its free tier, and then<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/amuse-is-capable-of-offering-1m-plus-advances-whats-its-long-term-game-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> attempt to sign the hottest of these acts to its in-house record label.<\/a> (Amuse&#8217;s label signs artists hand-picked by Amuse&#8217;s A&amp;R team, licensing rights for a set period while splitting any resultant profits 50\/50 with its acts. Why, a rapidly-expanding independent artist marketplace, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Amuse&#8217;s announcement of Pro comes as the company releases an important set of fresh market research, carried out by the respected folks at London-based Midia.<\/p>\n<p>The resultant report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/MIDiA-Consulting-AMUSE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Changing Nature of Music Creation\u201d<\/a>, reveals that the &#8216;artist direct&#8217; sector (i.e. self-releasing acts using services like Amuse, TuneCore, CD Baby and Ditto) generated an estimated $821m globally in 2019 \u2013 up 25% on the $643m the same sector generated in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>According to Midia, that $821m was enough for these self-releasing artists to claim a 3.9% global share of the recorded music market last year.<\/p>\n<p>(To put that into context, MBW estimates that if all these DIY acts were a single major entity, their $821m revenues would have likely made them the fourth biggest recorded music company in the world last year \u2013 smaller than Warner Music Group but bigger than BMG.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-80x34.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-80x34.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-160x68.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-320x135.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-418x177.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-648x274.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-836x353.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.18.50-1296x548.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/MIDiA-Consulting-AMUSE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Midia&#8217;s report<\/a>, when these self-releasing (&#8216;artist direct&#8217;) acts are combined with artists who retain ownership of their copyrights but who are signed to &#8216;label services&#8217; companies (like AWAL, Caroline, ADA, Believe or The Orchard), the total revenue generated by &#8216;independent&#8217; artists last year stood at a very significant $1.6bn.<\/p>\n<p>Midia estimated that there were 3.7m artists self-releasing on major digital services last year, with a further 400,000 signed to &#8216;label services&#8217; companies.<\/p>\n<p>Two other key findings from Midia:<\/p>\n<ul><li>As much as 85% of &#8216;artists direct&#8217; \u2013 3.1m acts \u2013 did not have any form of professional management representation;<\/li><li>Artists with label services deals were much more likely to have representation, with 140,000 (35%) having a full-time manager on board.<\/li><\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><img  class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-80x33.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-80x33.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-160x67.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-320x134.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-418x175.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-648x271.jpg 648w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-836x350.jpg 836w, https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/Screen-Shot-2020-03-02-at-20.19.14-1296x542.jpg 1296w\" data-sizes=\"auto\"><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Amuse Pro (pictured, main) becomes Amuse&#8217;s latest suite of tools for indie acts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/amuse-now-offers-ai-driven-royalty-advance-money-to-independent-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">following the firm&#8217;s launch of FastForward <\/a>\u2013 a platform which advances artists money based on projected earnings from their music on digital platforms \u2013 last year.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2020\/03\/MIDiA-Consulting-AMUSE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Midia&#8217;s new report<\/a> shows that, in a bid to increase their chances of making the Spotify Top 200 chart, artists in the USA, UK, Germany and Sweden are increasingly releasing more songs featuring other artists.<\/p>\n<p>Almost one third of unique tracks that reach the Spotify 200, says Midia, include a featured artist or collaboration in a song&#8217;s title.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously enough, Amuse sees this fact as prescient regarding the launch of its royalty-splitting functionality within the Amuse Pro toolset.<\/p>\n<p>Diego Farias, co-founder and CEO at Amuse, said: &#8220;Modern artists have the ability to create their own virtual labels, but they can\u2019t do it alone. Artists and their teams still face so many time consuming administrative tasks and financial pain points.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With Pro, we\u2019re giving our users more features to accelerate their careers, at an accessible price.
