{"id":99218,"date":"2023-08-22T10:15:25","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T09:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/?post_type=people&#038;p=99218"},"modified":"2023-08-22T10:15:25","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T09:15:25","slug":"jonathan-dickins","status":"publish","type":"people","link":"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/jonathan-dickins\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonathan Dickins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jonathan Dickins is the founder of September Management, which is headquartered in the UK but also runs offices in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Dickins is the manager of artists including Adele, Jamie T, and Paul Epworth.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Dickins&#8217; sister, Lucy Dickins, is global head of contemporary music and touring at WME, and Adele\u2019s agent.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><b>Jonathan Dickins: Career history<\/b><\/h6>\n<p>Jonathan Dickins is a British talent manager, most notably representing Adele since 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Dickins comes from a family deeply rooted in the music industry.<\/p>\n<p>His grandfather, Percy Dickins, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jonathan-dickins-september-its-important-not-to-take-anything-for-granted-in-this-business\/\">cofounded the NME and created the UK\u2019s first ever singles chart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan\u2019s father, Barry Dickins, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jonathan-dickins-september-its-important-not-to-take-anything-for-granted-in-this-business\/\">legendary live agent and the co-founder of ITB<\/a>. Barry Dickins has worked with renowned artists including Bob Dylan and Neil Young.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan&#8217;s uncle, Rob Dickins, was the Chairman of Warner Brother\u2019s UK arm.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Dickins got his start in the industry by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jonathan-dickins-september-its-important-not-to-take-anything-for-granted-in-this-business\/\">working for his uncle<\/a> at WEA Records UK as a junior A&amp;R in the 1990s. As his career progressed, Jonathan went on to take a role at the Instant Karma label.<\/p>\n<p>Towards the end of his stint at Warner, Dickins founded his own sub-label, Showbiz, where his signings included rapper MIA. He transitioned to management in 2003, helping secure MIA a deal with the label XL Recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Dickins founded September Management in 2006 with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jonathan-dickins-september-its-important-not-to-take-anything-for-granted-in-this-business\/\"> limited funds and no employees. <\/a>He launched the company out of a loft in his home.<\/p>\n<p>After being referred to Adele by XL Recordings A&amp;R exec Nick Huggett, Dickins researched her music on MySpace and invited her to the \u201coffice\u201d for a cup of tea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jonathan-dickins-september-its-important-not-to-take-anything-for-granted-in-this-business\/\">\u201cStraight away\u201d after the pair met outside of his garage, Dickins told MBW in 2017, \u201cthere was just\u2026a bit of a bond.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Soon after, Adele agreed to let Dickins manage her. His and September&#8217;s other clients over the years have included Paul Epworth, Tom Vek, Rex Orange County, Rick Rubin, and Jamie T, among others.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h6>Jonathan Dickins: Professional philosophy<\/h6>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/jonathan-dickins-september-its-important-not-to-take-anything-for-granted-in-this-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Music Business Worldwide<\/em> in 2017<\/a>, Jonathan Dickins said: \u201cThere\u2019s probably a balance I haven\u2019t yet achieved between enjoying the moment and not resting on one\u2019s laurels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very important not to take anything for granted in this business. Once you start thinking you\u2019ve made it, it\u2019s dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important to offer a creative opinion, even if the artists disagree with most of it \u2013 and, trust me, the good ones usually do \u2013 and remember that being overly reliant on people at labels is dangerous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jonathan Dickins<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added: &#8220;Artists and their [management] teams need to be self-sufficient because record companies can have revolving doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s important to offer a creative opinion, even if the artists disagree with most of it \u2013 and, trust me, the good ones usually do \u2013 and remember that being overly reliant on people at labels is dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving said that, when something\u2019s successful, we all win \u2013 artist, management, agent, label. What you ultimately get remembered for is success or failure, and we\u2019re all in it together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs my dad used to tell me: 100% of nothing is f**k all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Discussing the first time he saw Adele play live, in London&#8217;s now-defunct Pop club in Soho in 2006, Dickins recalled; &#8220;She did two songs and they absolutely floored me.
